CAP score of 299, diagnosed with Cirrhosis

I am a 60 yr old male, and was recently diagnosed with liver cirrhosis. My fibroscan showed 19.6 LSM score and 299 CAP, with a grade 4 fatty liver.

I have recently started cleaning up my diet and taking some medicine to reduce insulin resistance.

I am extremely disturbed and nervous as I struggle with maintaining a healthy lifestyle. My work takes up all day, with no time for excercise.

I want to bring in daily changes to potentially reverse this condition. Please advise and share your experience.

No, I haven’t been a regular drinker in more than a decade. I would enjoy a glass of wine occasionally. It’s NAFLD.

Dear Carblover8

If you [are in the UK and] would find it useful to talk things over, our nurse-led helpline is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 3pm on 0800 652 7330 (excluding bank holidays)

It can be really challenging to make lifestyle changes. Here are the links to information on the British Liver Trust website about diet and exercise, which you may find useful

May I ask please what medication you are taking for insulin resistance.

Insulin is belived to be the message that tells the liver to stop dumping sugar (glucose) into the blood system. Due to the buildup of scar tissue, this message can't get through, so the liver continues to dump more sugar.

Not sure there is a drug or treatment that can help with this, many people have to start using insulin injections and check their blood sugars.

Hi, I have some similarities to you in that my Cirhossis was diagnosed by a fibroscan (plus initial blood tests that were abnormal). I also don’t drink alcohol. Several suggestions about further investigations were made to me and maybe you might think it worthwhile asking. I am having an lEndoscooy on Tuesday.

Changing your diet is also a good move I think and exercise if possible. (Maybe walking instead of using car for short distances). I have been referred to a dietician (maybe declined as I have l have low bmi). You may consider this. I am no expert, just relaying my experience whilst being on a similar road. It can be tricky and I fully understand your feelings, but having control of it and not being controlled by it.

Take care

Not sure of what type of work you do but you may have to be creative with exercising ie standing from a sitting position and then sitting 5 times and repeat 5 x in a short period of time. Also finding time to exercise should lead to more productivity in work. Good luck. God Bless.
