How much Spironolactone are you on daily?

I was fine on 50mg last year. Fluid came back twice this year but cleared after a week at 100mg. So it was agreed I could increase it temporarily at home. But this doesn’t seem to be working this time. Other treatments seem very limited. What has worked for you when this happens? Is anyone on a higher daily dose? Thanks in advance!

Hello love.My spironolactone dosage has been 100 mg,and 40 mg of furosemide ....

For myself they worked better in parallel together.

My ascites is kept in check, after several drains, but I still have lower leg oedema at times, this can vary quite alot, even with me walking daily.

My hep consultant is allowing myself to tweak it at home,as that's the best course of action .....I cant see my consultant every couple of weeks ,when excess fluid occurs!!that would drive them crazy 😀. But I check with my liver nurse. Alot will depend on how your kidneys are doing, and dealing with it. It canbe very hard going on the kidneys

Please run it by your own medical team, there the ones in the know, regarding your own medical history.

My best.

Chris

Dear Chris,

Thanks for your quick reply. A combination in the future maybe the answer. I’m trying to do all the right things, exercising, walking, low salt diet and drinking plain water as advised by my nurse.

Thanks so much. It is always great to get a variety of people replying with their own stories.

Kind Regards

HI - my utmost sympathy, especially for the ascites, which can be living hell. I had two bouts of odema and ascites. Similar dosages to Redpoint of spironolactone (for ascites) and furosemide (for odema). Odema cleared first. Ascites took longer. Spironolactone can affect hormones prompting "man boobs" in men. Small and temporary in my case. Strongly echo the dietary advice below. Also v important to monitor kidney function for drug induced AKI (acute kidney injury). Stick in there ... you can get through this! Best wishes, C

Thank you so much for your post. My consultant is being very thorough and I have had ultrasounds of my abdomen and CTs with contrast of abdomen and kidneys which were fine and I am awaiting an ECG. Do you know if drs will go above 100mg of Spironolactone, temporarily, if it isn’t working? I realise there are kidney implications!

Thanks again for taking the time to share this information.

Warm Regards

Sounds like you’re in good hands … not being awkward but I can’t comment on dosing regimes. This will be a well trodden path for the clinicians so try not to worry !!!
