Toenail fungus

I have an appointment on the 31st , meanwhile I noticed toenail fungus on the two big toes, googled it and it’s saying toenail fungus only comes with end stage liver disease, however I read an article when someone with just fatty liver had it too, google has really caused me a lot of anxiety but I can’t help it when I see something new and my appointment date isn’t here yet, I have no symptoms of cirrhosis but I do have dull abdominal pains that still comes and goes , the very yellow urine when I stress or exercise... really looking forward appointment so I can know what’s going on, it’s funny how I don’t even know what’s wrong yet and I already feel so anxious and depressed sometimes cuz I’m worried about what it might be

Hi Zeus, toe nail fungus is common even in the perfectly healthy population. You can get treatments off the shelf in Tesco its that common 😆.Its in no way an indicator of any form of liver disease. Of course those with liver disease can get toe nail fungus like everyone else, but its definitely not an indicator of any stage and most definitely not a recognised indicator for cirrhosis.

Hope that helps.

I have terrible toe nail fungus, I also have NAFLD I spilt a chemical on my feet (methanol) over a period. My stupid involvement in biodiesel probably led to my NAFLD and my toe nail problem there is no direct causal relationship as far as I know between the two.

I am the world's worst DrGoogle, it led to me attempting suicide, being sectioned and spending time in a secure hospital.

This is how it works:

You google a condition, there are symptoms listed, you have one of the symptoms therefore you have the condition.

Things I googled that led me in bad ways.

Red Palms means cirrhosis, days weeks months spent daily checking them.

Red soles of the feet means cirrhosis ditto.

I had a yellow stain on my hand, that must mean jaundice, Weeks spent waiting for me to turn yellow.

Colour of pee and turds, now perfectly clear and brown. Months spent photographing the toilet bowl, comparing my output to my long suffering wife's output. crazy!!!!

Reading on google that once you have cirrhosis all the fat in the liver drops off.. Not true.

Reading on google that with corrhosis you die quite quickly, given the number of posters on here still alive 10 or more years later clearly not true.

Cherry angiomas indicate cirrhosis, not true, over 70% of people by the age of 70 of both genders have them. Pointless weeks spent counting angiomas on my belly.

A drop in testoterone is caused by cirrhossis usually at the end of life. A particularly toxic piece of googling.

My liver specialist told me it had nothing to do with my liver.

Hypogonadism can be caused by lots of things age weight my BMI is 36 there is the most obvious candidate.

It is readily treated by TRT anyway.

I have learnt that the endless googling only leads to pointless stress and wasted time and ultimately in my case officially recorded madness, section 2 and 3 of the Mental Health Act.

Speak to the BLT nurses, the conditions associated with cirrhosis are very obvious, varices, ascites and so on, they will not be missed.

As regards the toe nail treatment, the topical liquid takes months I believe there is a tablet form but check with your GP.

Medical anxiety is something that has the potential to destroy you, leave google alone. Over the summer I noticed a mole growing, I went to the GP within a week it was off. 4 weeks later I received a phone call to make an appointment. I was told the same day stage 1a melanoma. 98.4% of stage 1 live 5 years. Will I be in the 1.6% or the 98.4%? who can tell?

I made no attempt to google this issue, what I was told and the literature I was given was very clear.

This type of approach where a patient diagnosed with NAFLD or other liver condition is given a booklet like the dermatology specialists do would be a great help.

I would like to see posters in hepatology departments directing folk to the British Liver Trust. Not sugar coated reassurance but just the facts so that DrGoogle does not get a chance to screw your mind.

As a friend said to me once you turn 50 you are walking down an alley dodging bullets we all in the end have to die of something!!!

I only wish I had discovered BLT and this forum earlier.

Best of luck

Wow !! Thanks alot.... The way you have explained this to me has really gave me lots of peace, I know I have health anxiety and google is really killing my joy and making me scared of the future, right at this moment I don’t even have abdominal pain or any cirrhosis symptoms but the spike in my LFT which has reduced since I started using supplements and milk thistle has made me really cautious and I just feel like there’s something I need to catch early, most of the symptoms that scares me like dizziness, fatigue and lack of sleep I came to learn that they also potential symptoms of health anxiety, even pins and needles feelings in the leg which I automatically thought was pheripheral neuropathy due to cirrhosis is also a symptom of health anxiety, I know I will never drink again, I have never binged but I had couple of vodka daily years ago which I have stopped and my head keeps bringing it up that those things are here to ruin my liver , the way you have explained this to really helped me calm and I’m really grateful, although I’m still going to my GP on 31st to rule out the things bothering me, at least then I can have true peace .... thanks God bless you

HiI am glad that it helped, I also had the pins and needles mularkey. Turns out I have high haemoglobin and PCV and high ferritin for which I receive venesection monthly until it is lower.

That also explains why I itch when I get in a hot bath and why sometimes I itch. NOTHING to do directly with my liver!!!!

Speak to the BLT nurse if you worry.

Some of the stuff I read on google I can no longer find.

The liver shedding all fat when you have cirrhosis just not there.

The cherry angiomas being a sign of cirrhosis does not exist.

I was psychotic and seemed to imagine stuff, do not open that door to madness!

I have not tried milk thistle but good luck, in the mean time embrace your life.

I follow hygge principles, lots of walks in the winter, lots of tennis using the machine to practice, walking football, sailing and evening spent reading in front of a hot anthracite fire. Lots of time with your family. My eldest has spent almost his entire career after uni wfh, paddleboarding and kitesurfing and is now on 80k!

It is a pleasure to have him around as it is with my other 2 when they are home from uni and makes me feel very ashamed about the consequences if I had been successful in killing myself.

Digitally devices switched off in the evening.

If you ever have a concern feel free to DM me, I am no Doctor but I have a very in depth understanding of the difference between medical anxiety and reality.

Life ruins your liver in the end, life ruins many organs if you live long enough.Enjoy yourself and check with your GP about the supplements.

The close relative, they are first cousins of medical anxiety is the search for a miracle cure.

Money wasted, harm caused to your body and almost certainly your liver.

It is like the secondary scammers who offer a way to retrieve money lost to a scam by getting you to pay up now with new money.

Deeper and deeper it gets, I am hopeful that GP will pass you onto a liver specialist as well as reassure you.

Then you can be tested

Fibroscan twice

numerous US

CT

CT with dye

MRI

yes I have steatosis, as do many people of my.age.

There is no miracle cure for cirrhosis or even fatty liver that I am aware of.

The only way to deal with it is exercise, diet and total, complete, abstinence for life. I might also add that allowing enough space in your life to allow joy is the best cure.

Hey there, dont panic. If you're feeling a bit low and anxious it's easy to pick up/catch all sorts. Hubbie had decompensated liver disease (now compensated) main cause was his immune system. With taking immune suppressants he caught a lot of odd things including dodgy toe nails. Consultant recommended this and it worked a treat. All natural product ordered online.

I work for a podiatrist. Many many many people have toenail fungus. None of them with any liver or any other kind of disease.
