best news ive heard all year, pubs moaning about closures. As price of a pint is unfordable . Maybe less ppl will end up on this site in future. With alcohol related illness. Has to be a win win situation now 😃 or improvement
Pub closures: best news ive heard all... - British Liver Trust
Pub closures
its all about the money . Greed. Olny when health starts to fail then ppl realise health is wealth. . Not enough warnings purposely. Keep the money rolling in for government
problem drinking for many has nothing to do with cost as I well know.
I don’t think it will. I work with and know lots of people with ARLD who always found the money to drink as did I.
like I say if it save some life then thats good. Its not just problem drinkers who get liver disease, many social drinkers run into problems by simply not realising the damages there doing. Pubs play a part by promoting it in first place. So more pubs that close the better i say
like I say if it saves some lifes then thsts ghavehahavhavehahavehahavhavhavehahavhaveh

I think the counter argument you've received is about how pubs are also a meeting place. Places that serve food. Places that unite and provide for a community.... some have post offices in them, my grandad played skittles in them.
As Richard said, drinking went up when pubs closed during lockdown - the real drug dealers are off licences and supermarkets and the relentless drink producers. I think on balance, it is mean spirited to want pubs to close. People who misuse alcohol find a way whatever.
Your passion about drink culture is so commendable but pubs and social clubs probably deserve a broader understanding because of their wider value.
Best
Chris
I don’t need a lecture on liver disease thanks. Pubs closing often have a negative impact on communities. I doubt very much closures will impact numbers of people with liver disease positively
I don't share your schadenfreude on the hardworking people and businesses who make up the hospitality sector. In rural communities, the village pub is the focal point of the community and a vital hub for many people who would otherwise be isolated. I have ARLD but I in no way blame the pub industry or resent those who are still able to enjoy a drink in moderation. A community without a pub or even a new development without a pub is usually desolate and soulless.
I have my own views if not interested no need for your comments. Simple as that.
Sorry Chris, I've had to delete my post as the administrators didn't approve.
I can see where you’re coming from with this, and yes, the pub is one of the places that some people may rely on too much - therefore drinking more heavily/regularly, leading to potential liver disease.
Personally, I would be gutted if the pubs around me started to close. Especially those owned by local people. After everything businesses have been through (and face), they need customers now more than ever.
Even though I have cirrhosis (due to alcohol), I still love going to the pub, (as I did pre-diagnosis). It’s where I go to socialise, take part in quizzes, eat with friends etc and all of this without alcohol.
I don’t resent puns at all for the position I am in. This is because I did not get into my position because of drinking in them - too expensive if you really want to have a bit of a session!
My problem was drinking at home. Having a couple at the pub and then home to drink properly! A bottle of wine for the price of a pint? Perfect! A box of wine from the supermarket for the price of a round for me and my partner in the pub? Even better. As well as this, going into shops like some Savers for toiletries and being able to pick up a couple of ‘just in case’ bottles of wine - way too easy!!! You can stop drinking when you leave the pub. If you’re at home, there’s another bottle in the kitchen and you’re capable of walking to it, you’re going to carry on drinking!
So yes, you get your heavy drinkers in the pub and that won’t change. Some of those people are probably there on their own for a reason and are probably looking for comfort/company.
l won’t be celebrating any pub closures. Seeing a change in the cheap booze deals in shops/supermarkets - yes!
Sigh… All the landlords who pretended to be my friend over the years but were merely state-sanctioned drug dealers. They’d serve people who were yellow. We all know pubs make most of their money from a small percentage of drinkers. I’m sure they loved me! Yes pubs might be community hubs; and I agree it’s the blue cider from the offie that’s the worst. I say legalise everything and regulate. No sense cannabis or indeed heroin being prohibited if booze - by most measures a devastating drug - is legal. Anyways I shed no tears for pubs or breweries. I’m going to make all those enablers see photos me when I’m dying. See what they do over the years. See what they sell. Death.
People that abuse alcohol don't drink in pubs!
It's the home drinkers that have the severe problems and supermarket prices that will never be high enough to deterr them.
