Wondering if my US scans show that my liver has micronodular surface when studied? This could be why I have symptoms of cirrhosis but good reports because surface of liver would be smooth, I suppose size and shape of liver would be different though? Anybody heard of this?

Put those questions to your doctor

People on here know more than them. It was someone on here that put it in my mind. Yet don’t see him trying to put my mind at rest.

in reply to Worrysome1

No one seems to put your mind at rest. You are literally going round in circles looking for a diagnosis which only your doctor is qualified to give you. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Seeing Gastro in August so might find out then. There has to be a reason for my symptoms.

in reply to Worrysome1

As you have been told many time by many people on here your symptoms are caused by your anxiety 🤷🏻‍♀️

No they’re not. My symptoms are not caused by worry, wish that was the case. It all points to severe liver disease. The blurred vision and eye floaters, probably toxins. Chronic constipation is seen a lot in esld, hence Lactolose use to help them pass stools to get rid of toxins. Hair loss, the liver concentrating on more important body functions.

in reply to Worrysome1

Well my husband never suffered with blurred vision or eye floaters. No constipation, he was prescribed lactulose to prevent him straining as that can effect the brain while suffering with HE. The lactulose was at the same time removing the toxins from his blood stream so curing the HE. When my husband was diagnosed with ESLD he was already in the high dependancy unit then 10 days later died in intensive care with liver and kidney failure, bronco pneumonia and yellow from head to foot. Are your symptoms that severe?

Well no but I’m terrified of progressing to that state. I have abstained for well over 6 months now and will never touch wine again. Your husband had abstained for 3 but it still didn’t save him, poor lad. I remember a comment about his hair and my lovely thick hair is falling out in handfuls. I’m beyond terrified. My poor children. It’s no use people saying about good blood tests and US x 2 because loads on here say they’re unreliable.

in reply to Worrysome1

Exactly... you never drank as much as him and you haven't drunk for 6 months. His hair didnt fall out, the waves did and it lost it's shine and that was at the same time he turned yellow .... in hospital being detoxed. He remained like that for the last 18 months of his life. But yes maybe you are right, you have ESLD and all your scans and tests are wrong and your docs are missing something. So probably best you wait til you have seen your gastro rather than picking up snippets of information on here which is confusing and worrying you.

I’m older and have drunk over the safe limit for longer. If I’d had an inkling I was injuring myself to this extent I could easily have given up, easily. I was too busy looking after everyone else to pay proper attention to my health. Just praying I’m compensated. No ascites and no bleeding so far.

in reply to Worrysome1

So how much older are you than my husband was when he died at 54 ?

Worrysome1 profile image

I’d been drinking 11 years longer, not in the same quantities but too much every night nearly.

You're doing well then

The more you worry the worse the worrying is going to get. Sitting at home reading everything that you probably don't need to read escalates in your mind something worse than what it is.

I nearly died last year of decompensated cirrhosis, I was in a dreadful place. I didn't even know what it was and thought oh it will be ok it will fix itself. 9 months on, I am still here, last time I spoke to my consultant was in April informing me that I have gone from decompensated to compensated. I have my next US in August and 6 monthly appointment with the consultant in November, I have no idea what's going on with my liver..

I did sit at home, read up on anything and everything getting myself in a right pickle. Instead, I pulled myself together, studied for a qualification as opposed to looking up Dr Google every five minutes and got myself a job.. I don't have time to worry about everything. So the moral of the story is, don't keep worrying about things that you don't need to worry about.

Stress and anxiety can cause hair loss, and you are probably so tired through worrying all the time that it's affecting your eyes.

I have got Cirrohsis for the rest of my life, but life goes on and I am not going to sit here and worry.

But as Laura and lots of other people have suggested talk to someone about your anxiety, we can only point you to people that can help you, which is your GP and support lines etc.

Ok, so please stop worrying xxx 👍🌻

Maybe you should look at this from the other side. What would actually help you to know for certain that your liver is fine? Your tests say you don't have liver disease. Your scans say you don't have liver disease. Your symptoms say you don't have liver disease. Your doctors say you don't have liver disease.

Perhaps you could have a think about what would reassure you. Is there a test you feel you could rely on? If there is then you could see about getting that done. Either saving up to get it private or asking a doctor nicely on the understanding that this would be the last liver test you'll ask for. Or go to a doctor and start again with your symptoms with an open mind. It does sound more like you have dietary, ageing or anxiety issues.

I’m pinning my hopes on my consultation with Gastro in August.

in reply to Worrysome1

Right so till then stop wasting your life googling, stop asking questions on here which no one can answer and get on with living your life with your children you say you want to be around for. It really is as simple as that 🤷🏻‍♀️

Hi there, Do you have a specialist team you are under?

My husband currently has decompensated cirrhosis, and is very poorly.

He was admitted to hospital last summer with bleeding varices, admitted to ICU after endoscopy, he nearly didn’t make it through, and was admitted again back in feb, repeat of last summer.

He had 9 units of blood transfused 1st time and 7 units the 2nd time he was admitted.

He has no issues with his hair falling out, nor does he have any eye issues other than cataracts.

My husband has been alcohol free for a year now and he has been told he is borderline for assessment, will be monitored closely and will be have regular bloods, endoscopy and consultations, he also has the liver nurses helpline number to call if he has any issues or worries.

What other symptoms do you have? My husband has a huge long list of symptoms that we discussed with his consultant.

Had to use Lactulose since January, not me! Eye floaters and blurry vision, hair loss, very strong, unpleasant smelling odour from urine. Started feeling sleepy in the afternoons. I do have an appetite and can get off to sleep but waken around 3 and can’t get back off. I walk every morning, look after grandchild but not grandma I was. I have not had wine since December and eat healthy, drink lots of water. I have no real interest in anything only getting to the bottom of my symptoms. In comparison to your husband I’ve got it easy I know that, it’s progression I’m worried about. I really hope your husband gets better soon, poor man has been through so much. You must be so worried. My husband drank all through his liver illness after several warnings and it didn’t end well. My drinking was nothing in comparison to his. Lots of love to you both.

Hi,It’s difficult, however we have a lives to live and that is what we are trying to do, I also work full time and will continue doing so, we are not dwelling on it, nothing we can do to change it, so it’s a case of get on with life, we’re living with it.

Have you been tested for diabetes as eye floaters, and blurry vision can be symptoms as well as the tiredness, constipation can have many causes including IBS.

My husband has had a fibroscan, ultrasound, endoscopy, bloods and all have showed cirrhosis, the only time his bloods were good were after transfusion, but CT showed and told a very different story. Fibroscan was used to confirm a diagnosis, consultant not interested in the reading as it’s not much help when his liver is this badly damaged and struggling.

Urine smelling and discoloured could be an underlying UTI again get it checked with your GP, my husband doesn’t have smelly urine, doesn’t have anything wrong with his eyes only cataracts and only has 1 symptom out of what you have mentioned, and he is very poorly and borderline for assessment for transplant.

If you had cirrhosis then I would expect you to be showing more symptoms than you currently are.

Your scans and bloods are not showing anything so you need to have faith in your GP and others.

My husband was convinced he was dying of multiple organ failure a few weeks ago because he had been watching rubbish online, his consultant told him it’s not helpful and there is a lot of misinformation online.

Take care x

Yes you too. Hope his health improves greatly and look after yourself too xxxxxxx

You know what? There are people right now living with terminal illnesses who have a better, stronger and more positive outlook on life than you do. They don't waste time googling and asking the same pointless questions over and over. They are out there grabbing as much of life as they possibly can and making happy memories with and for their families and making the most of each and every precious day they have left. They have faith in and gratitude for all the doctors and medical teams who have diagnosed and treated their illnesses as far as they could. They don't wallow in self pity or unnecessary worry but with sheer grit and determination, ensure their lives are full and happy to the bitter end.

Have you tried some CBT for what appears to be potentially health anxiety. I was decompensated last year, 7st with 10 litres of fluid in my belly but I wasn’t on lactose or had eye floaters. Everyone is different I know. I hope you can find some peace because worrying about what might be or death takes away from the joy of life. We are all going to pop out cloggs at some point ,so just make the most of it. Dr Google is never a good idea.
