Support for me

Hello,

My mum has recently been re-admitted to hospital. I spoke to the alcohol nurse this morning who confirmed her Bilirubin is 172 and Alkaline Phosphate is 407, both more than triple what they should be. The nurse expressed concern given the rapid deterioration in my mums liver functioning and they are going to rescan the liver, hopefully today. I am going to request them to re-calculate the MELD score, however she has outlived her previous prediction twice over. Are there any other questions I should be asking?

My mums scores are worse than they ever have been, yet she is up talking and has been going to work for the last few weeks. She continues to drink, but has seemed somewhat ‘better’ to a certain extent over the last few weeks so I find it hard to get a good handle on where we stand in terms of disease progression. Does anyone have any practical support/books/programmes that they would recommend to help with this? I am feeling really overwhelmed and consumed with worry, despite going to Al-Anon and using the resources from NACOA.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Alex,

We are sorry to read how unwell your Mum is. If you are UK based, you can call our nurse helpline for a supportive chat? Its open Mon to Fri 10am to 3pm on 0800 652 7330

I am sending you hugs and wishing well to YOU and your mom. Does she have addiction? She can't drink in a hospital I hope. Having a few drinkers in my family circle, I know how helpless you may feel... it is in yiur mom's head and power to quit- with your support. I am not a medical advisor of course but may be you will better. My GGT is triple and noone knows what it is... so triple may be - may be is not bad. But of course there are other markers ... don't lose hope.
