I've been taking propranolol for 8 years since I had ruptured varices several years ago. My liver tests have remained compensated and I'm in great health. I've started going to the gym and was wondering do I still need to take them? If they're to slow my heart rate and exercise obviously increases it then I'm worried about side effects. Any advice is much appreciated.

Hi,
Its great to hear that you are keeping so well, however, no one on the forum can comment on your medications, please speak with your liver team for safe advice.

I was wondering the same thing, for the same reason! 👍 🏋️🏊 Looking forward to getting in better shape this summer.😊You do have to work closely with your doctor/s. l am also compensated and have not had any bleeds, but l did have swollen varices so l was prescribed carvedilol. It lowered my pulse a bit too much, so my doc cut the dose in half. I also take a diuretic etc, and need to be super careful about staying hydrated. Since we need to exercise, we will have to make the effort to work within our limitations. Good luck to you! 🍀
I totally understand why we ask questions here. Of course there are doctors but sometimes they have no answers or are vague. My surgeon for example says he doesn't know why my ggt is high. Or GP may say take one or 2 pills. As for you doing well, it is great!
My consultant ok’ed me to do Intense exercise and take supplements(vitamins). It’s very much an individual thing.
My partner had bleeding varices episode after stopping to take propranolol. The consultant later explained that he had to continue taking it even if he felt good, because it lowered the pressure on his portal vein and prevented the varices from collapsing.
After being on propanol since 1998, I used to have painful sudden falls, this was after I’d been taken them for years due to cirrhosis/varices,I thought I cannot go on this way, and gradually stopped them. Very wary now of what mediation I take. Like me, I suggest doing important research on a drug first.
Hiya. I was on Propranolol for at least 5yrs. I suffered a serious Duodenal denal Ulcer bleed & Consultant changed me from P/panalol to Carvedilol 6.25mgx2 daily. Also put onto Folic Acid 5mgx1daily. I did have a mild Heart Attack whilst in Ambulance - shock caused it, due to haemorragic bleeding. I do walk daily but at a steady pace & am governed by how I feel as I do my exercise. Just be careful but if in doubt always ask the Consultant - their Secretaries are marvellous at getting you answers! Good Luck & go steady.
