Is 80 a normal albumin level. Doctor says it is but surely it’s high?

Hello!

Nobody here is medially trained to advise on blood results. Please speak to your doctor if you have concerns.

What is regarded as normal?

Your Doctor has already told you its normal.

Posting new topics about every line of a blood test wont change the fact we aren't medically trained.

Just want a bit of reassurance, feeling very scared.

Hello there, may l ask what specifically led to you getting blood tests in the first place? Just wondering if you have/had symptoms or signs that suggest illness. Do you have a good appetite, how is your energy level/sleep?

I have been worried since Christmas as up to then I was a regular wine drinker. Non since. I have been constipated, impossible to go without Lactulose. Hair loss, dry mouth, blurred vision on and off. LFT January perfect. Monday, eyesight terrible, light headed. Ended up on drip because phosphate was low. Doctors at hospital say LFTs were normal again but want me to go for another scan and repeat bloods. Albumin was 80 and my platelets have gone down drastically to 180. They say not to worry but I’m terrified. When calm my appetite and sleep not too bad. Thank you for replying. If you can shed any light I’d appreciate it. I walk every morning and shop, look after my grandchild each afternoon for couple of hours.

Well that's great that you are able to get out and exercise, and spend time with your grandchild! It is also a plus that you've stopped using alcohol regularly. If you're worried about liver disease, another thing you can do is to cut down on sugar, fat, and salt in your diet. For me personally, this is consistently my biggest challenge. I'm an emotional eater, finding comfort in food as l try to cope with Life.We are not allowed to comment here on specific test results. But l will share that, l'm in the US and the lab l use has a normal range for platelets for example of 150-450 10*9/ L.

At my last check up, my platelets were 111, which was obviously flagged as low. My lymphocytes were also down. When l had similar results a few years ago, my GP was convinced l had leukemia! I don't, and my liver doctor explained that lab tests capture moments in time, and can be affected by the amount of fluids in the body, whether you're getting the proper amount of rest, even recent exercise. So they chart the results over time, and investigate further only when there is a consistent long-term pattern. She did check some vitamin levels as a follow up, thank goodness they could use the same blood sample as they collected a few liters, ha ha, joking.

I also looked for phosphate in my latest results, but we don't test for that apparently. I had to have a drip once, pre-diagnosis, for low potassium levels. It sounds similar, but l don't have any medical knowledge.

It may sound simplistic to say, but live your life and try not to worry. Even if it is liver disease, it is a slooowly progressive process.

l sincerely hope you enjoy every minute this summer with your grandchild!

My platelet count is 345 according to my GP. Bilirubin 5, albumin 45. I was told by first hospital doc that platelets were 180, albumin 80, bilirubin 8. I am puzzled but bit relieved and I didn’t hear her wrongly 🤷‍♀️ It’s my kidneys they want to keep an eye on. Since taken phosphate my constipation has disappeared! They are blaming it on my water tablet that I have taken for years. I still won’t touch alcohol though after reading on here. I hope you’re keeping well in the US and thank you for taking the time to be so kind and replying.

And you too. X

Hi,

Reported reference ranges for blood tests can change slightly between different laboratories, so its therefore very important to discuss the results with your own GP. You can ask what the reference range is and see if your results are normal.

We recognise that you are worried about your blood tests but no forum members can give you the reassurance you need, only the doctor who has access to your test results can.

Very best wishes.

Why tell me they’re normal at hospital when 50 is the limit. I’m really worried, I’m sure they’re trying to make me feel better. As for speaking to GP it’s imp9ssible.

in reply to Worrysome1

We would suggest you speak to your doctor about this.

in reply to Worrysome1

No it really isn't impossible to speak to your doctor ... l've had some lovely chats with mine about my daughter recently !

Well try mine Laura, it takes you hours to get answered and then they tell you ring back at 8.45 same thing happens. Will go in person. Doctors at hospital say blood tests all normal but albumin is high according to what I’ve read at 80. I have to have repeat blood test and scan and have had to have been on a drip for low phosphate.

in reply to Worrysome1

Pleased you can go in person. We actually can't do that unless the GP feels it necessary to see a patient but online chats or phonecalls are working well here. Hope the scan and blood tests put your mind at rest. Ask questions while you are there maybe. Jot your queries down on a note pad and take it with you rather than having to chase up your doc afterwards?

I won’t get to see the doctor but I can try to get an appointment. Phosphate is linked to liver which is scaring me but I would have thought albumin would be low not high with liver disease.

in reply to Worrysome1

I realise you won't get to see the doc but we are not yet able to go to the surgery without phoning for arrangement with the receptionist 1st. But our service is excellent l'm pleased to say 😀

in reply to Worrysome1

Having an albumin level above what is considered normal, doesn't mean you have a condition which needs treating, which says to me your doctor hasn't found a condition which needs treating. So, if you ring your surgery or send an email via the online service and ask for a doctor to phone you back, you can ask him.
