Hi everyone, I have just had a second Fibroscan and although the results have improved and according to the liver nurse, the results are a miracle, I am even more confused.
If you guys can remember my first post back in January 2021, I was in total despair and at my first fibroscan, I was told the I have advance Fibrosis/Chirosis.
My first scan was in January with results reading as follows CAP 400, Kpa 20.4 and TQR/M 13%, I had a biopsy in February and the results stated that I have Bridging Fibrosis portal to portal, Portal Central and prominent central to central fibrosis, the results also stated I have NAFLD with Steatoheptaitis, Macrovesicular Steatosis and occasional hepatocytes with ballooning (all foreign to me). I received a call from the liver nurse stating the consultant wanted to do the fibroscan again which I attended yesterday and the results were GAP 262, Kpa 6.6 and TQR/M 18%. The nurses stated it looks you are cured, and that she has never known this before, with the first results indicating Stage3/4 damage, I was told that the results will be passed to the consultant to be reviewed, and there is a strong chance, that I will be discharged. The nurse could not explain and put it all down to weight loss, exercise, and lifestyle changes. I am very happy, but very cautious as well, could this be really the case, in such a short time 5 months from being told this was it, to now being told that I am cured.
Thanks for reading.

A fibroscan is almost like an ultrasound (only without the gooey stuff) - the wand is passed over your liver and 10 readings are taken which score the liver for CAP (amount of fatty change in the liver) and kPa (a reading which indicates the density of the liver). They take an average or median of the 10 readings which gives the final kPa and the CAP score.
CAP scores go up to 400 indicating how much fat there is built up in the liver.
kPa ranges from 0-75 and depending on the score and the reason for the liver damage this can indicate how dense the liver is on a scale called Metavir Scale i.e. F0 No Fibrosis, F1 Mild Fibrosis, F2 Moderate Fibrosis, F3 Severe Fibrosis with Bridging/Incomplete Cirrhosis and F4 Cirrhosis.
[Fibroscan can give false high readings if there is ongoing inflammation in the liver (indicated by blood tests). Fibroscan can't tell the difference between inflammation and actual fibrous tissue]
You won't necessarily have a fibroscan, if results from other tests are pretty definitive then it adds very little to the diagnosis. My hubby has never had a fibroscan in 9 years of being diagnsosed with cirrhosis.
Hope you get your results soon, obviously you'll need bloods done and if they still can't find a cause then biopsy may be necessary to look at what's going on in the liver at a cellular level.
Thankyou Katie . I’ll let my son read all your info tomorrow , he’s a stroke specialist , neuro trained but very concerned about me has he knows I was always fit etc just like your husband .
I wouldn't have thought its a 'miracle' Martyn but a result of your hard work in making the lifestyle changes you have. It's entirely possible to reverse fatty liver damage and fibrosis right up to the point where it even becomes borderline cirrhosis. Providing the attack on the liver is halted and steps taken to heal the liver (which you have) then it's all good.
Obviously you need to maintain this new lifestyle and keep looking after yourself and your liver going forward and hopefully you'll live a long and healthy life.
kPa could have been falsly elevated on your fibroscan if you had raised inflammation markers at that time.
Hi good news I m still awaiting tests had ultrasound and mri not had repeat bloods just 1st last June a note from GI saying no further lumps n bumps found not seen consultant only 1 over phone chat I've lost 1 and 1/2 stone changed my diet I've don't drink alcohol not since my teens but not much them in not brill with exercise as I hard a mini heart attack 18 months ago and have copd what diet do you follow so pleased you've doing well 👍
All I can tell - a new person to this forum- it sounds great that you reduced the numbers!!! Did you feel pain in January and onwards?
