I’m new and I struggle to sleep

Hi

I have severe sleep problems which have got worse. I am really trying to look after my health but struggling to know what to do. I was told I had a fatty liver after an ultrasound 9 years ago and told not to worry because lots of people had it ( I was having a check to make sure I didn’t have a gall bladder condition) but I have problems with my blood pressure ( highly variable)

I want to have a sensible conversation about it with my GP but all they do is prescribe amitrypteline which makes me feel ill ( even half a tablet makes me feel ill) I have problems with calcium, low vit D and a range of other nightly things and really higgly problems that make me sound neurotic but most of all I feel tired

I get a tingly itch round my middle on the right side sometimes like a nerve tingling

What should I do? Am I being a hypochondriac?

Hi Granvilleey So how does a day in the life of Granvilley run? Are you filling your day doing enough and having a calm relaxing winding down towards your bedtime?

I had a rubbish nights sleep last night. Got woken up by 2 screeching cats and couldnt go back off so got up. Went back to bed, dog on my side, hubby on his back snoring so l gave up !

There is nothing worse than not sleeping --I have been an insomniac for 31 years --every day anything between 2 and 4 hours sleep .It started after my husband died .I was offered Amitryptilin but they made me feel so ill I couldnt take them I was like a Zombie .Doctor has put me on Zopiclone but reluctantly as they dont like prescribing them . They suit me very well and dont give you a hangover the next day .

So you were told you had fatty liver 9 years ago. What monitoring has gone on with your liver since that date? Whilst a lot of people do indeed have fatty liver and most don't know about it, it isn't something to be ignored either and should be monitored for signs of progression.

I suggest you need an up to date set of blood tests and a scan if possible to make sure that in the 9 years it hasn't progressed. Fatty Liver disease (NAFLD) is the fastest growing cause of liver damage in the Western World - in the USA (and no doubt the UK isn't far behind) it has become the leading cause of liver damage.

I note in your profile you also have a history of anorexia and this too can cause liver problems.

Do not be fobbed off, this needs checking out to see the current state of your liver.

All the best, Katie

Non at all. I have had blood tests occasionally and I have “ slightly raised” liver enzymes ALT a bit above normal. Everything is usually attributed to either my BMI (30) embryonic metabolic syndrome, anxiety and streaking gastritis. I feel that I am being treated as an anxious hypochondriac. But it may all be because this is how you are supposed to be at 60 ?

No you are not supposed to feel like that at 60 .... 60 is the new 40. I'm 59 in July and l wouldn't like to be worrying about my health next year. Look after yourself, and l hope you get some answers. Good luck x

Forgot to mention some of it has also been attributed to mild hyperparathyroidism.

You shouldn't just be left with a diagnosis of NAFLD, this can progress to more serious liver disease especially in light of thryoid issues and a high BMI. There are newer NICE guidelines for the monitoring of NAFLD which your GP should be following or you should be under the care of a hospital specialist. NAFLD left for 9 years could have led on to worsening symptoms and this needs checking. Bloods don't tell the full picture, a scan or a set of bloods called an Enhanced Liver Fibrosis Test (ELF test) could be done to see if your condition remains NAFLD or has potentially pregressed.cks.nice.org.uk/topics/non-...

Please go get checked and switch doctors if necessary. My liver disease was first detected in 2013 and I had a doctor who said it was too early to treat. I was generally non-symptomatic and believed him. Earlier this year, symptoms arose quickly and a recent biopsy revealed cirrhosis. I’m just starting treatment though a future transplant is already being discussed.

I don’t say this to alarm you.... it is said out of kindness so you can seek out the help you need. I too, worried I might be a hypochondriac, however some blood markers, the ongoing fatigue, and small clues along the way should have compelled me to switch specialists sooner.

Wishing you all the best!
