Inflammation of the liver and glandular fever

Hi,

Just been diagnosed with a horrible virus and I’ve been feeling dreadful for 10 days now with fluey aches, severe headaches and night fevers.

I was using paracetamol to lower my temperature but have just been warned against it because my liver is inflamed - probably due to the viral infection.

Does anybody have any tips to help me feel comfortable especially at night? Are there any herbal remedies that soothe the liver? Or reduce inflammation?

Just as a matter of interest, do you happen to know roughly the dosage and amount of paracetamol you were taking and over what length of time?

How do you know that your liver has become enlarged? Have you sort medical advice?

I’ve had blood tests which has shown inflammation of the liver. I was only taking 2-4 paracetamol daily but for 10 days.

Thank you for that, none of us on here are medically qualified to speak about the medical aspect of liver disease, but only to share our experiences and offer opinions.

Glandular fever could cause an abnormal liver function test readings, and cause the liver to become enlarged. The dosage amount of paracetamol, you've been taken shouldn't have had too much of an impact upon the liver, but having said that, if the liver was having to deal with a possible viral infection and having to process the paracetamol at the same time, this may have caused it to become enlarged.

Once your Glandular fever ("kissing disease") has abated, then your liver should settle down and return to normal in about 6-weeks. If after this time your readings are still high, then further investigation would be needed to establish the cause.

Hi Bird, it took me a while to get over glandular fever when I had it. I was off work for 6 weeks! Yeah, you feel rough as anything, lol.

As others have said we can't really give advice on things to take as really only your doctor to give you any advice that is reliable. I wouldn't bother with the herbal stuff though. They may end up doing more harm than good, especially if your liver is already under stress from the virus.

Its one of them things you're just going to have to wait out I'm afraid. But, do speak to your gp and ask what he or she would be happy for you to take and the right daily dosage.
