Hi folks new on here. My partner has cirrhosis and I’m seeing changes in behaviour he is more confrontational and unstable and impulsive . I don’t know if I am accepting unacceptable behaviour or if he genuinely can’t help what’s happening. He’s not open to hearing this or suggestions of let’s get help. Any advice is most welcome . Thanks

Behaviour/personality change in someone with cirrhosis can be linked with a side effect of cirrhosis called Hepatic Encephalopathy - this is a condition which affects the brain and is due to a build up of ammonia/toxins in the blood. Is hubby being treated for HE ? This would usually be a combination of Lactulose and Rifaximin. The aim of the lactulose is to make the patient move their bowels 3-4 times a day and also has special toxin removing properties. Rifaximin is an antibiotic which deals with the toxins.

The BLT has an excellent resource page on HE and if anything there rings a bell re. your partner then his consultant needs to know about this change.
