Fibroscan over 65

Hello, my uncle has been unwell for sometime and has lost alot of weight. He has been told he has liver disease and has had a fibroscan with a kpa of over 65. The hospital dont seem to be very forthcoming with what the next steps are. I havent heard the word cirrhosis mentioned but from what I can see a score that high is not good. I didnt know if anyone else was familiar with the fibroscan reading and could give any advice. Thank you

If you look up Fibroscan Score Chart on line and look at images you'll see the different coloured score charts. Fibroscan goes from 0-75 kPa and has differing cut offs depending on what the cause of the underlying liver disease is. Without knowing what his bloods are like it is impossible to say whether this 65 kPa result is reliable because fibroscan can't tell the difference between actual fibrous tissue and ongoing liver inflammation (so if ALT, AST - which are liver inflammation markers - are raised then there is a possibility that fibroscan reports a higher than accurate score). If, however, he doesn't have ongoing inflammation and the score is accurate it is very much at the cirrhosis end of things. Fibroscan should be only one part of the jigsaw puzzle towards diagnosis.

Have a read up on cirrhosis so you can ask pertinent questions also the BLT has an excellent page on the patient charter which details what care a patient should receive and also details lots of questions you can ask. It is important to know the signs and symptoms to look out for and also to actually manage the condition yourselves so you can push when things need pushing for etc.

Hopefully some follow up has been arranged for your uncle and his next of kin to get proper results and advice.

Thank you very much

Hi and welcome,

You have had some great advice from Katie.

We would suggest that your uncle speak with his own specialist team regarding the FibroScan result and what that now means for him with regards a diagnosis.
