I'm new here and very worried

I've had a sensation below my right rib for years. Not a pain but a feeling of 'something' being there. I've noticed it more recently, particularly in the night. I am sitting down for long periods during these limiting times. I also have a loss of appetite. I can eat well in the morning but don't fancy food at night. I told the doctor some time ago. She felt around and thought it might be something 'muscular'. I was also told my liver bloods were all in order. I am feeling generally unwell but can't specically describe in what way. I used to drink regularly but have now completely stopped. I've consulted Dr Google far too much and now have convinced myself that I have advanced liver disease. I am very worried and would really appreciate some feedback.

The most important thing is that you managed to stop drinking so at least it isn’t getting any worse. The symptoms that you describe could be any number of things. Tell your doctor that you need further liver tests and my advice is to stop asking DR Google. Best wishes

I can tell you about my experience. I was feeling generally unwell and had a loss of appetite, which meant often I would go a couple of days without noticing I hadn't eaten until bad headaches and falling over made me notice. I lost my sense of smell which didn't help with the appetite. I lost three stone in a year. I was so tired and it never lifted no matter how much I slept. My muscles and joints ached and I kept getting cramp and restless legs at night. I was dreadfully itchy, scratching my stomach and legs until they were sore. I had no pain or sensations around my ribs. A year later I saw a doctor about a yellow lump over my eye and in less than a week I had three blood tests, an ultrasound and a diagnosis. I have advanced liver disease and my liver bloods were sky high.

It is possible to have advanced liver disease and normal bloods, but only when the liver has all but stopped working and you would likely have turned yellow and vomited blood long before that point was reached. If your bloods are normal your liver is probably fine. You should go back to your GP, lay out all your symptoms and let them investigate to see if something else is causing them.

Often liver disease is silent and you don't know about it until you start getting jaundice or retaining fluid. Normally people get fatigue and tend to be more susceptible to infections in the earlier stages. Your issues may be unrelated to your liver you should discuss it with your doctor and ask if you should see a gastroenterologist. They may be able to offer advice about what is going on.
