Markkky: Hi my I joined because ei have... - British Liver Trust
Markkky
Hi Markkky, welcome aboard, hope you find us a welcoming and supportive bunch and when you feel ready to introduce yourself fully and discuss your liver concerns hopefully we can help you out.
I would say, first port of call though if you have concerns would be your doctors, take a list of all the symptoms you feel worried about and get relevant tests. We can support and give advice based on our personal experiences but we can't offer comments on symptoms, suggest diagnosis or indeed carry out the relevant tests that will actually progress the care of any condition you might have.
All the best,
Katie
Sorry Katie thanks for answering me, am not the brightest are you saying that its unlikely but it does happen. So the vast majority of the time the the blood would flag something up but not all the time
Markky

Hi and welcome,

Warm wishes.
any body know if Cirrhosis would show up in a liver function test
LFT's or liver bloods are a starting point, they would have to be taken in conjunction probably with scans to establish if you had fibrosis or cirrhosis since LFT's only come from the actually functioning bits of the liver. Sometimes someone with very stable, compensated cirrhosis can actually return fairly normal LFT's.
If a person was symptomatic of cirrhosis it would be unlikely that LFT's would be normal.

It gets complicated - yes a cirrhotic liver can return near to normal bloods IF the liver is stable (compensated) and the patient is not symptomatic.
When the liver is struggling though & there are physical symptoms then it would be unusual for bloods to be normal - things like bilirubin, albumin and other proteins will be out of whack (deranged lft's). A standard set of LFT's is only a starter, a full liver blood panel is much more accurate.
During the stages building up to cirrhosis i.e. if the liver is under attack and inflamed then inflammation markers like ALT, AST, GGT are likely to be raised too.
If in doubt get push to get further tests done a scan like an ultrasound or a fibroscan might be helpful.
Katie
thanks Katie very helpful
I was wondering if Glisson's capsule gets stretched is that it permanently damaged and always uncomfortable or does it back into shape, should anybody know I would appreciate the knowledge
Hi Mark a word of advice if I may. Any medical questions speak to the professionals depending on who you are seeing. The liver is extremely complexed so that is always your best route. What you will get from here is support and knowledge through experience alone. Here if you need a chat I’m available directly
Thank you
