My partner had hep c about 5 years ago now. He got the all clear after 6 months of treatment but hes now getting liver and kidney pain, severe back pain and he has itchy hands and feet. Can hep c come back??

Can hep c come back
When you asked the same question last year the BLT admin reported that the only way Hep C would return after fully successful treatment would be re-infection.
From reading back your partner had fatty liver at the time of treatment and was still drinking in your last posts - is he still drinking?
Has he been having 6 monthly ultrasound scans since treatment? They should still be keeping an eye on his liver. There is a chance damage has progressed.
He must visit his doctor for some tests otherwise you won't work out what is going on and he won't get the appropriate help.

Is that right ? Only my late husband caught HepC from infected blood transfusion in the 80s, was successfully treated many years later yet his antibodies were tested every time he was admitted to hospital to check for any activity, he was also refused a kidney transplant because of the risk of the HepC kicking off again. I'm not questioning your answer just interested to know why he was always tested.
Thanks for replying. He has never had a scan since treatment and he only has 3 pints at the most a fortnight. Only if we go out. He is not an indoor drinker. He's constantly tired but then can't sleep properly either.
He needs some tests to get an up to date picture of what's going on with his liver.
I will talk to him. He dont feel they take him seriously so he keeps refusing to go.
I don't know which treatment for Hep C he had but some of the newer ones slightly increase the chance of liver cancers so it is normally routine for someone who has had Hep C treated to continue to have scans every 6 months ( I am not in anyway saying that's what the problem is but that it is routine to have follow up after treatment).
If he's symptomatic he needs to be seen and preferably referred to a hepatologist. List all symptoms, current meds and make sure he's listened to.
This needs further investigation.

I have chronic hep B and C genotype 1. i had to have 11 months of interferon and it was successful... 3 months later it was back. they gave me the strongest they could and it was good for 3 yrs... then is checked positive again/ havent drank or drugged..I am sober for 12yrs... so i believe that info is incorrect
I got Hep C in 1986 and eventually had liver transplant 2013 followed in 2016 with new treatment which eradicated it. As far as I am aware there should be no reccurence and have not heard of any. I do keep in touch with Hep C trust. Reinfection is most likely cause if it has returned but you need to discuss with doctors. I suggest also you contact Hep C trust and ask if they have any cases where it reoccurs naturally. Hope all goes well.
