Got results of a liver ultra sound today it said "Test result US ABDOMEN Report, Borderline, No Further Action." Then received a text from my Dr saying "Your liver scan confirms early cirrhosis. Its very important you stop drinking alcohol."
Obviously not spoken to Dr yet will next week. Any chance shes mistaken? The lady doing the scan said there was scaring but it was reversible. I know cirrhosis is not.
Thanks guys
James

Early cirrhosis is indeed now considered reversible to some degree with significant lifestyle changes or treatment of the underlying cause. It sounds very much like doctor feels yours is at this stage.
Even the BLT publication on cirrhosis states:-
Reversing the Problem
Until recently, it was thought that a liver with cirrhosis could not be healed. This is usually the case because most diseases that cause scarring of your liver (fibrosis) are long-term and difficult to ‘cure’. However, recent research has shown that it may be possible to heal scarring and even cirrhosis where the liver disease causing this damage is able to be successfully treated.
Check out the BLT page on cirrhosis and download the cirrhosis publication.
I wouldn't trust a diagnosis made solely on the basis of an abdominal ultrasound. A FibroScan to measure the degree of liver scarring would be helpful in determining whether your liver is cirrhotic. The gold standard for evaluating liver disease is a biopsy performed by a specialist skilled in interpreting the results.
You should ask for a referral to a liver specialist who can do more tests to determine whether you have cirrhosis & the stage. If you have early cirrhosis & you do all the right things from here on the non-cirrhotic parts of your liver should repair & you could live a normal lifespan with few problems.
Hi Jim,
We would suggest you read our cirrhosis publication ( Katie has posted the link already) and go back to your doctors for a detailed discussion about the scan and conformation of diagnosis.
