. Can someone please explain the term coarse echo texture as a finding on an ultrasound for me? Is that inflammation, fat, scarring? I’ve only had an ultrasound and am scheduled for a fibroscan. I’ve been really sick but because of the pandemic they had canceled my fibroscan appointment awhile back.

A radiography site on line says "Coarsened hepatic echotexture is a sonographic descriptor where there uniform smooth hepatic echotexture of the liver is lost. This can occur due to number of reasons." - Including any and all of the things you list i.e. fatty build up, ongoing inflammation, fibrosis or scarring.
Sadly, it will take more tests to establish what exactly is going on with your liver - obviously there is some change that warrants follow up.

I believe stage 2 fibrosis they consider mild echo texture, moderate echo texture is stage 3 fibrosis. Im not sure of coarse. This is just what ive read in relation to some university studies and such. Its not really reliable to try and grade from a ultrasound though. Definitely fibroscan and then biopsy if they results aren't good and you need to confirm. A fibroscan is much less accurate the higher your bmi is. Dont forget that each person reading your ultra sound might describe it differently. By he/she saying you have coarse echo texture they could be saying there is just echo texture in general. Trust me when i say don't get your self worked up. I got my self worked up over my fibroscan results and the anxiety caused more issues than my liver by far. Just take a deep breath, calm your mind and be around those you love.
