Hi D231

Like your last post 5 days ago your question is unfortunately something we can’t really answer, not because we don’t want to it’s just because it is all down to the individual’s own medical situation.

We can maybe tell you about our own experiences. For instance for me that answer was a most definite No - no matter what I did or what could be done for me - my condition just deteriorated until I needed a Transplant. Mind you it took years to get to that point!

I’m sure others may be able to relay a much more optimistic story....

Good luck though!

Hi D231, hope we can help make sense of your situation.

Has the cause of your cirrhosis been identified? If the cause of your underlying liver damage is identified and treated - in some cases this might be by making significant lifestyle changes, for other conditions medication can slow the damage of cirrhosis.

You seem to have had an improvement in your fibroscan result already which shows some possible reversal of damage.

What symptoms have you got that say you have decompensated cirrhosis?

Cirrhosis is categorized -

Stage 1 Cirrhosis but with no varices and no ascites (Compensated)

Stage 2 Cirrhosis - Varices present but no ascites (Compensated)

Stage 3 Cirrhosis - Ascites +/- Varices (Decompensated)

Stage 4 Cirrhosis - Bleeding in GI tract due to portal hypertension +/- ascites (Decompensated)

You can stabilize even from stage 4 (that's where my hubby was in April 2012, he's now back about Stage 1 - possibly stage 2 based on last endoscopy.

If the underlying cause is stopped or treated you can make significant improvement, the liver will never fully heal from cirrhosis but it can improve and you can live a fairly normal life even with a significantly damaged liver.

Have a read at the British Liver Trust page about cirrhosis so you can learn lots about the condition. The whole BLT website is a goldmine of information about all aspects of liver disease and questions you might want to ask your doctor regarding care, treatment and forward plans. The more you learn about your own condition, the more you can take care of yourself and make the most out of limited clinical time with doctors.

Any further questions, just ask and we will help where we can. If you give a bit more information about yourself and your condition you might get helpful support from people who have been in the same situation.

No, cirrhosis isn't a death sentence.

My husband's doctor has patients on his books who have had the condition for over 20+ years and are no nearer needing transplant now than they were when first diagnosed.

If your ascites has resolved with diet then and you arn't bleeding from varices then your condition has returned to a compensated state so you are doing better.

If you maintain your abstinence and continue to look after yourself then you are giving your liver the best shot possible. Alcohol related liver disease has one sure fire way of improvement and that it the removal of alcohol so well done you on the 6 month abstinence and long may you continue to improve.

Now you have a diagnosis of cirrhosis you need to be monitored for the side effects of the condition i.e. having 6 monthly bloods and 6 monthly scans.

Keep up the good work and hopefully you will live a long and healthy life from now on.
