Auto Brewery Syndrome

Anybody have this? I think my gut is fungus dominant and this is the cause of fatty liver. I feel drunk if I eat carbs or sugar. Taking iodine right now to slaughter my gut flora followed by probiotics and vegetables. Any thoughts?

Hello Josh, have you actually been tested for this condition or are you under the treatment of a medical professional. You seem to be saying you 'think' this is the issue. You need to get proper tests undertaken by a qualified doctor and then receive appropriate medical treatment (if appropriate). Taking iodine without medical supervision can be dangerous and cause thyroid issues amongst other things.

Please see a doctor, discuss your issues and get properly treated.

All the best, Katie

The condition is very rare, however, there are tests which can be run and treatments that can be done implemented (none of which mention iodine). Have you specifically stated to doctors that this is what you suspect is going on. Found this page online which details tests which can be run and treatments, it might be worth taking something like this to doctors to get specific tests. healthline.com/health/auto-...

Hi I found a synopsis on the British Liver Trust site of this article Fatty liver disease caused by high alcohol producing klebsiella pneumoniae. Which says that the condition is caused by this bacteria rather than yeast.

cell.com/cell-metabolism/fu...

I stopped eating fruit months ago as it makes my stomach churn so much it is uncomfortable. I also decided to cut out carbs/gluten. This has all helped diminish churning and has increased my energy. I have replaced this with a high fibre diet.

So I am going to mention this article and take it with me to Dr when I see them. If you want more natural remedies you could see a functional Dr as you are in the US. I have heard it is best not to take iodine unless you are tested and found to be deficient and this has always been in connection with thyroid issues, not for yeast or bacteria infections.

I read probiotics can make some bacterial conditions worse, as they are increasing the bacteria. This was in the book by Izabella Wentz called Hashimoto Protocol. - a 90 day plan...….. She talks about iodine and probiotics in connection with Thyroid issues, which she suffered herself. She is a biochemist I think, so goes into detail about these issues. She also has a website that might be helpful.

Probiotics definitely worsen the condition. If you have dysbiosis or a gut microbiome that is not balanced with good and bad bacteria, it is best to not start off with probiotics. Your condition will worsen because you are adding bacteria to the mix when you already have too much of bad bacteria or not enough good bacteria. It may cause a warzone in your gut. And this can create a sort of "infection" in your gut because you are essentially increasing the # of bacteria into the mix. These bacteria when imbalanced will eat the food you consume and produce gas. So you may have a lot of excess gas. The bacteria can also produce toxins which then the liver has to detoxify. Enough bacteria and enough toxins can definitely overload the liver and may cause liver enlargement. This is where the autobrewery syndrome comes in. For example, with imbalanced bacteria, your gut can no longer produce the strong immune system you need and then bad bacteria like klebsiella can overgrow. (Yeast can overgrow too, so you need to do bloodwork or stool testing (outside of the conventional labcorp or quest) to see if you have yeast overgrowth).

Klebisiella can cause fermentation and literally produce alcohol in your body. The liver has to process that alcohol. So now you don't even have to drink alcohol for you to be an alcoholic and have a liver that belongs to an alcoholic.

Your instinct is to kill the klebsiella. That may be fine. (some people use garlic and oregano oil; others use antibiotics). But if your liver is already overburdened, and you go full force killing these organisms, then your liver will be screaming because it is further overburdened and get more inflamed -- called hepatitis. When your liver is screaming, that means you get fatigued, have hormone imbalance (women will have the worst periods), temperature dysregulation. Be careful because your liver may start to develop scarring and hardening called primary liver sclerosis.

It is a fine balance to get rid of these microorganisms and not kill your liver while in the process.

Digestive enzymes can be very helpful, especially when all of this is causing your gut to not move and not digest foods.

If your liver is suffering, you may want to consider some kind of supplement to soften the scarring and improve bile flow. Often times, bile flow or bile production is inhibited. When you increase bile flow and its production, this may resolve some of the micro organism over growth because bile itself is an antibiotic.

in terms of doctors, you can see ND doctors or functional med docs who are more familiar with resolving gut issues.

You may also want to look up SIBO and autobrewery syndrome.

I would not suggest probiotics.

Eating fruit definitely makes bloating worse, as you are feeding the overgrowth of bacteria.

I myself need to cut out more carbs, though it can be hard if your adrenals depend on carbs.

Also, SIBO is really defined as the loss of gut motility, loss of MCC.

You may want to do a stool test by companies that specialize in looking for these types of microorganisms. I am not talking about labcorp or quest stool tests. You may have to see an ND or functional medicine doctor for them to order you these tests.

If the results show low good bacteria (firmicutes or bacteroidetes), then you are more prone to growing bad bacteria like klebsiella. Klebsiella is known to alcoholic autobrewery syndrome in your body.

You are going to want to get rid of the Klebsiella.

Take a look at the article posted by the writer snow22 too.
