What to pack?

Hi All

Had a call from the Royal Free to say they want me to sign the transplant consent forms when I’m up there on Thursday for my last test.

Slightly freaking out as thought I’d have a couple of weeks to get used to the idea!

Will obviously have to pack a bag but not sure what - any suggestions please (even the obvious) would be appreciated.

Sam x

Don't think you will need to pack.

Signing is consent to go onto transplant list

Good luck with the last test

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣I knew you meant that !!!!

Just the usual. Have bag ready as soon as they tell you that your on the list.

Yes you could have a lot of waiting about do bring your IPad, book etc

If successful & transplanted you will only need your toiletries to be handy for a few days.

Good luck and I pray you make it to The List 🙏😇❤️’

Something really useful is a two or three metre phone charging lead.

I would say a mirror, handheld fan, sookie sweets and iPad/tablet/book to combat boredom once you are on the mend, good luck hope you don’t have too long to wait 😘

Hi Sam, Glad to hear that you are going on the list. Ear plugs, medicated wet wipes are always handy and funds/card to pay for TV. Once you are back on the liver ward you will spending most of your time in your bed for a good few days. All the best. Alf

I've packed some crocs/shower shoes, having used hospital showers a few times having something on your feet is a good plan. Must be non slip of course. X

Advice I was given and turns out to be true - for the first few days you’ll not need anything other than toiletries!!! If someone will be visiting you they can bring stuff.

I was asked to go to a ward immediately before the op and waited there. My bag was with me. When it was time to go to theatre, my bag had to stay on the ward. After op I spent 4 days on icu and my bag was still on the ward a few floors above me!! Never saw it - or my toiletries until I went onto the ward again!!!

Good luck when you get there. Andy.

Absolutely correct Andy. Overnight bag only needed after a few days! Even then they’ll give you all the essentials things like toiletries if you’ve forgotten them...although of course it’s nice to have your own. I even got given a shave by a nurse - only time that’s happened in my whole life 👍.

Now why didn’t I think of that!! I just looked like a really skinny scruff until I got a chance for a shave and shower!!

Wass71 profile image

That might be useful to me, I've been plucking hair off my chin for sometime now, maybe if I can't do it for a little while I might end up with a beard, so a nurse armed with a razor might be helpful!!!!

Decent toilet roll!

NHS stuff is about as wide as dental floss.

Good point just pointed out to me.....whoever is with you may want to have a decent bag packed...they’re more likely to use it!!

For the first few days you need nothing, the bag I took was looked away until I was back in the ward, the don't want stuff in the way in icu, have a bag packed for your family to bring in, personally I always used hospital nighters as I bled and had drains in, couldn't wear knickers because of drains and I had a catheter. Once in hdu, they gave me my phone. Wasn't till I was on the ward I had need of anything, washbag, tablet (lots of stuff downloaded), kindle books, charges, bottle of squash, tissues (lots of crying, hospital ones are a bit hard). Ask your family to bring things in as you need them, remember there isn't a lot of storage space.

So last year my hubby signed the consent form & 4 days later got the call at the Royal Free, if it's Dr Patch he likes the large chocolate buttons we hadn't packed an overnight bag. We did it when the call came. However you don't need it for the first 2/3 days as you are in ICU , hubby was allowed to keep his small rucsack which I then put his pyjamas, small toiletry bag with the essentials toothbrush & paste, comb for his hair, couple of pairs of socks & a few t-shirts. They made me take our small cabin bag home that had a towel, clothes, books, his laptop etc home as they don't have a huge store cupboard to out it in. I brought stuff back with me when he was admitted to the liver ward from ICU

Oh I am so happy for you. Everyone has given great advice as always. So, not much more to add. You would laugh mind on my first call I had packed a bag like I was going away for a weekend, including a change of clothes. LOL Quickly learnt what to take, so by the time I had my third call I had a nice lightweight bag with essentials. Love the R Free I was there also. Good Luck, your re-birth is close.

Hi Jaycee

Presumably you packed nightwear, were you able to wear a bra?

I might pack two suitcases because my hubby wouldn’t know where to start!

Did your family stay up there with you?

in reply toLunartic

Hi Sam, yes, I packed nightwear but in the first days you do not even need that as you are in icu. Then on the ward.

You will not need a bra in my opinion, because of your staples and stitches. You just have to hang free LOL. It not a big thing on your mind at that point.

The advice you had about iPads, phone and leads is great along with books. I liked wet wipes too. Great for a quick face refresh. The other usual toiletries.

I am in Bournemouth, so my husband came with the first call and my son flew back from Dubai where he lives.

The second and third time, I went up alone. My daughter came up as soon as she knew I was going down for sure. She was there when my eyes opened. It was awesome.

My husband stayed in the premier inn directly over the road, from the royal free. If you cannot get in there I know another place not far away.

That is a great idea to pack two bags if hubby does not know where things are. As when you feel better you will run out of PJs maybe and underwear? Maybe best to get another small bag with a few nightwear bits ready for him to bring up for a change. All the same the hospital gowns are available if needed.
