Hi all,

I’m an Egyptian male (26 yo) I was slightly drinker last two yrs.

Once upon the time I was drinking whiskey (Jim beam) and then felt fatigue for many days with long hrs of sleep, I went to Gp (October 2018) then he asked some blood tests, I had my blood test and I found out that total bilirubin is high (1.8), I turn back to my gp and he told that I’ve hepatic toxicity and asked to stop drinking.

After a month I went to check with prof. He asked check up again (November 2018) my total bilirubin was (1.3) slightly elevated indirect bilirubin with normal range direct one.

Prof said that I’m Gilbert syndrome cuz also ultrasound had shown everything fine, also no hepatitis (A, B,C). He asked me to loose weight I was (110 kgs) and stop drinking alcohol.

Today I had bilirubin test and it was 2.23 :’(

I lost weight within these 7 months now I’m (73 kgs) and never tasted alcohol anymore.

I’m afraid I don’t want my eyes turn to yellowish

I cry cuz I feel I’ve illnesses.

Sorry for my Weak English, I hope u help me

Hello there.

First up you’re seeking treatment and sounds like you have did the right thing by stopping alcohol.

The reason I’m on this forum is because my eyes turned extremely yellow, as did my skin and it was after binge drinking jack daniels as if it was going out of fashion (or to simplify the English, I was drinking far too much on an already damaged liver).

The best thing you can do is hang around, allow the doctors do their job and come back with a clear picture of what may be causing the elevated levels.

I’m by far not the most knowledgeable person on this forum, but what I do know is that the people on here coupled with some basic researching allowed me to prepare for my next consultant visit armed with all the questions I need and want to ask.

Are you in the UK?

OK, so assuming you’re in Egypt I have no idea how healthcare works? Is it through health insurance you will be treated? Take a breath, try and clear your head. Easier said than done I know.

Hi, Gilbert's Syndrome is not a disease but a genetic feature. The main thing is not to bother the liver. Eyes will periodically turn yellow, you need to come to terms with this. You can clarify the diagnosis using a genetic test. Alcohol is contraindicated! Diet and rest more. Good luck!

Hi sir,

So my eyes will be yellow till end of my life ?!?

I’d rather die than living like this.

Please tell me genetic test to identify if I’m gilb syndrome

If you lead a healthy lifestyle, eat right food and have a good rest, then your eyes will be white or slightly yellowish. I would like to recommend wearing smoky glasses when you need it.

Careful, it’s difficult to quantify without professional help. My nephew is 23 and he has a condition that for now I forget the name of but his eyes are permanently slightly hello. He lives a normal, healthy lifestyle.

You are so young, do you still have your parents? Please do not harm yourself, you will be able to live a long healthy life with this condition. You must avoid alcohol, starvation or dehydration to reduce the incidence of symptoms. The following is information from the National Health Service in the UK.

"Gilbert's syndrome is a lifelong disorder. However, it doesn't require treatment because it doesn't pose a threat to health and doesn't cause complications or an increased risk of liver disease. Episodes of jaundice and any associated symptoms are usually short-lived and eventually pass."

Hi sir,

Yes I’ve my parents, and I stopped alcohol since October 2018.

Actually I was drinking lil bit not daily nor weekly.

But I’m sad the way I see my bilirubin is high while getting good diet and lifestyle.

I don’t feel nausea I don’t feel vomiting, but my eyes edges slightly Yellowish colored which made me so depressed.

I am sure you have lovely eyes and besides, anyone worth giving notice to will like you for your other fine qualities. Make sure to ask your doctor about any questions and concerns you may have. Best of luck to you!

You are very welcome. I am a woman and I thought of my son when I wrote to you, I was worried that you felt so distraught over this. It is just one obstacle in your path, there will be others in life that will be of more concern.

Hello,

It is very important that you check with your medical team whether you do have Gilberts sydrome or something else. If it is Gilberts then you might like to read our publication:

Hi which part of Egypt do you live in ?

Cairo has a few good hospitals that maybe you could possibly get a second opinion on what's causing your symptoms!

Have you been checked for Bulharsia ...just a thought if you live in a rural area as it is common and can effect your blood tests!

Best to talk to a good liver consultant about your fears and try not to worry too much!

MnM007 profile image

I live in center of Cairo and I’m a pharmacist so I always take my precautions about my health the most bad thing I’ve done in my life is drinking alcohol

ballie52 profile image
ballie52

Hi most likely not the alcohol as you would need to be drinking on a daily basis over a long period of time and you would have to be consuming quite a lot !

I know that alcohol is not as ready available in Egypt to the general population so I'm assuming that you haven't been drinking on a daily basis!

It does sound like you need a good chat to your consultant on what's going on here to reassure you and give you more information on Gilbert syndrome if that's actually what you have!..maybe consider a second opinion from another doctor as well !

I was going to say. I lived in the Maghreb (North Africa) a few years back and whilst I drank alcohol back then, it wasn’t really in the culture.

Hi MnM007, your English is fine. You didn’t drink that much alcohol from what you wrote, so there’s no need to feel bad about that 🙂

But how did you manage to lose 37Kg in 7 months? Weight loss is normally good, but that’s too much too soon. Did you diet (eat less) or do a lot of exercise? If so, your body will have to recover from such a big weight loss. What happened to lose so much weight?

I hope this is right: Bil tawfeeq! (Good luck!) 🙂

My diet is only about 800 calories healthy food per day with daily normal activities.

Actually alcoholic beverages are available in Cairo and it’s easy for ppl to get what they want there. Yes I’m not drinker but I was drinking unwisely, about 6 cups of vodka mixed with whiskey in few minutes. It’s crazy I know and it’s what I’m thinking that made me sick

CocoChannel profile image
CocoChannel in reply toMnM007

Hi MnM007, 800 calories a day is a very small amount. Not enough. That will be adding to your problem. Can you not eat more?

MnM007 profile image
MnM007 in reply toCocoChannel

I’m afraid of getting fat again

CocoChannel profile image
CocoChannel in reply toMnM007

But you need to eat properly. You won’t be getting the correct nutrition with only 800 calories, and this will make you sick.

Does your doctor know you eat such a small amount?

You can keep the weight off and still eat properly.

Hi I'm surprised at how easy it was for you to obtain alcohol as I lived in Egypt for many yrs and the people who got access to buying alcohol were mosty expatriates! as they needed to show their passport in order to buy it as it's a Muslim country unless of course you are a Coptic..it doesn't matter either way just glad you got on top of it and stopped drinking as over a period of time it does damage the liver!

But in your case I think there definitely is another cause of your symtoms and maybe get a second opinion to clarify the cause would be useful!
