Can anyone tell me why they look at blood flow on a Doppler scan? My consultant has booked me in for an abdomen scan and a Doppler scan. Many thanks.

'Doppler’ ultrasound is used to obtain information about blood flow in your arteries and veins.
Sometimes a specific Liver Doppler Ultrasound assesses the blood that flows into the liver through the portal veins and the blood that flows out of the liver through the hepatic veins which empty into the heart.
You may want to clarify exactly what doppler test has been ordered for you, and why, with your own consultant.

Trust is right. Just to add to that its also useful to tell if you have blood flowing in places it shouldn't like when blood flow pressure opens up alternate routes (shunting) for blood flow that should normally be directed toward the liver but cant be due to portal hypertension. and also the direction of the flow. If the blood is moving in the right direction (hepatopetal) or if it is flowing backwards (hepatofungal). All of these things can help them understand if you have any obstructions that otherwise arent visible on typical ultrasounds as well by being able to monitor if the blood is free flowing or not (patent flow).
