Sleepiness

How common is sleepiness with cirrhosis? My fiancé has been really tired the last 2 days and has slept a lot. He’s sharp minded, no confusion, no slurred speech. He says he’s just really tired and comfortable in bed. I don’t have a hard time waking him up and he’s eating, he is just falling asleep a lot easier and a lot more frequent than normal.

Forgot to add that he didn’t sleep well from about Saturday-Tuesday. I’m hoping it’s just him catching up on sleep and nothing serious.

Hi There

I was just thinking I'm not going to sleep tonight.

I got up at 11 and went for a lie down 6.30 while 8 pm.

Tiredness knocks me off my feet I think it's quite common I have stage 4 cirrhosis and I'm due to return to work soon 😨😨

I would not worry unduly.

Take care

Hayley X

Thank you Hayley. That’s what I’m hoping it is, just being tired from the cirrhosis. He’s always been a man who loves his naps but now I worry about any and every little change. And I’m sure it doesn’t help that our bed is huge and comfy like a nest and we keep it cool and dark in the room (we joke that we are vampires haha). We are about to go shopping so hopefully he doesn’t get too tired. I hope you get back to work soon and have lots of energy!!

I sleep a lot and easier as well. If I neglect the need for a nap I become very easily angry.

Now he’s nauseated 😔 I hate cirrhosis. This poor man.

Hi

Sleep problems are quite common for a number of years before my transplant I would sleep most of the afternoon then go to bed to itch and stay awake/dose until three then fall asleep till 9, then repeat!

I was told this is a normal effect.

Cirrhosis is definably a pain

Hi there. When were you made aware or told it’s cirrosis.as the disease develops so do the symptoms.i managed to carry on working putting in gas lines on the highways for five years from my first varicile bleed but couldn’t carry on from November last year.but ended up having a transplant end of March.also in November my asities got a lot worse..Hope your both ok anyway.x

This is just a thought, but further investigation may be needed. Those who have become type 2-diabetic, can become very tired at odd times of the day, this may be due to increased sugar within the body. A cirrhotic liver can become insulin resistant. It is belived that insulin is the hormone that tells the liver to stop dumping sugar into the blood system. If this signal doesn't get through, then the liver continues to dump sugar.

Have a word with your GP and have your sugar levels checked. Like l've said, this is just a thought.

Good luck.

Hi i have cirrhosis of the liver and find the fatigue hard 2 deal with. Been 2 jimmys for a liver transplant assessment and they found a blockage in my liver so I have had a catscan b4 they can conclude the assessment. When I was having my liver biopsy I asked the consultant if there was anything you could take and she said if there was she be rich!!! I also get alot of unexplained bruising that again due 2 the cirrhosis. X

My husband was getting extremely tired before he was in hospital with a variceal bleed that almost killed him. Tell him to make sure his stool isn't darker than normal as that can indicate a bleed. My husband was napping and then I found him on the toilet passed out and had to call an ambulance. Now we know what to look for and notice. He needed many blood transfusions. I don't mean to scare you just to alert you to a very real possibility with cirrhosis.

Fatigue and sleepiness are very common with cirrhosis sadly. In the last few months leading up to the transplant I couldn't plan anything due to needing naps at the most random times 😔. My nighttime sleep was shocking too. Most nights I'd be exhausted yet wide awake until early morning. Hope everything works out well for you both x

After we got home last night he fell asleep. Woke up at 5 this morning and felt wide awake and great. No nausea, no sleepiness, no bloating. He had been constipated a bit for a couple of days but that’s cleared up. Maybe it was the constipation? I don’t know but I do know that I have to remember that he bloats a bit when he doesn’t go very well. He ate a whack load of rice a couple days ago and that always slows things down for him. I made some low sodium low sugar blueberry bran muffins for him today to keep things a bit more regular. I’m still keeping an eye on him though. He tried to make me promise that I wouldn’t read anything about the liver today and relax instead. Pfft, that silly man must have no idea how much I love him 😉♥️

And thank you all very much for replying. I don’t know what I would do without this place. Go completely crazy I’m sure.

This is mad to say but apart from a period of terrible nightmares (tablet induced doc thought) I actually sleep better now than I’ve ever slept in my life, I mean the actual sleep. Now the fatigue when I am awake is another thing, everyday I could sleep for a good 2/3 hours in an afternoon and that’s with having 8/9 hours at night. I can’t quite call it tiredness somehow, it more my body is tired, if that makes sense. It did start before I knew I was ill. It has never changed for better or worse apart from one month when I was put on steroids, then I was a live wire. Previous to illness my sleep was about 5 hrs a night. Its always worth a mention to the doctor though, any changes at all. My Mum always used to say when your body sleeps it is healing, I’m not sure how relevant that is but worth thinking about whilst you are waiting for the appointment.

Ya know, after my fiancé quit drinking, his quality of sleep improved a lot. Which is kind of a piss off because he really drank a lot at night so he could fall asleep. The bad dreams he has now though are pretty intense. From what I’ve read they’re common with both cirrhosis and when a person quits the booze. I just hope they ease up for him soon because a lot of them involve his kids and it really bothers him. How you’ve described the fatigue is pretty much what he says too. He naps every afternoon but he’s always been a napper.

My mom and grandma always said the body heals when you sleep as well, I truly believe it. My guy even says he feels like his body is saying “ok we need to heal let’s sleep so we can do that” and every damn time he goes through a sleepy episode he wakes up feeling better than he had before. So keep believing!! I hope you’re doing well, best wishes to you!

fatigue and feeling extra tired or drained was one of my first signs. the inside of your body is working really hard and your mind is working overtime and your body just isn't getting everything it needs. you just feel tired more easily cant stay up more than a few hours without feeling like you need a rest or a nap. and less energy also with a little lack of motivation from feeling depressed over things. all ads up to be more wiped and tired and needing a bit of more rest time.
