I have PBC and recently (last 4 months roughly) I have noticed that when I’ve eaten a meal I am only satisfied for an hour or so, then I feel like I haven’t eaten. Obviously I’ve gained weight, which is a pain. I did google (as you do) and found some info about Leptin levels & liver disease. Has anyone had any experience of this with PBC and if so is there treatment? I see my consultant in May so I will discuss it then.
Thanks

Hey Bevmc, I dont habe PBC but I definately share in the problem you have. I can eat even a large meal and then about an hour or so later I feel almost a cavernous hallow in my stomach like I haven't eaten in a day. It also comes with the feeling of almost wanting to faint and feelings of anxiety and a more rapid heart rate. Like a constant starving. I havent gotten it totally figured out yet but so far some of the knowledge I have received has been that liver disease can do a few things to cause these feelings. One being that the liver has a harder time storing glycogen. Which is what gives you short term energy in between meals. So from what i understand it makes it harder for some of us to go long periods of time without food. Another being that for some they can experience a premature emptying of the stomach. The third thing was as you mentioned about Leptin levels being altered. I wish I could be more helpful but as i said im still trying to narrow it down myself. Perhaps we can keep in touch and share what we learn going forward. I suppose this issue of insatiableness is better than the lack of appetite that many have suffered with here. Keep in touch!
I also have oesophageal refux which doesn’t help cos that adds to feeling nauseous, maybe it’s linked somehow. Thanks for your reply I’ll keep in touch!
Their are a number of things that cause reflux and it may be wise to get this checked out. We have a family history of hiatus hernias, my brother has pyloric problems. We are all on meds for this. My daughter also has hiatus hernia. This constantly occurring can cause ulcers, even cancer.A camera into your gullet and tum will show anything untowards. I take lansaprosal , so this counteracts the reflux.
Thanks for that, I also take lansoprazol for the reflux, although it doesn’t always help, I have the ‘camera’ yearly at the moment. It’s really the hunger that is new and annoying.
Good your being monitored. The rumble in your tum is caused by grellin. I learned that this also occurs when your thirsty. I now have a brew if Im feeling hungry. A number of times the hunger pangs just go. Worth a try as getting our weight down is a massive challenge .
Could it be reactive hypoglycaemia ( not to be confused with diabetes) the symptoms are very much what phoenixpalazzo describes. I have this and to counteract it, I eat small meals more often. I can’t go any longer that about 2.5 hours without food. I have pbc but don’t think it’s specifically related to it, sorry I dont have much advice apart from perhaps look into it and see what you think. Large meals could be the cause of the reflux.
Thanks for that, I’ll look into it. The reflux I have constantly whether I’ve eaten or not, some days lansoprazol helps others it doesn’t. I’ve kind of got used to it now, but the hunger thing is new and I don’t want to gain weight. The small meals might help, so I’ll try that ‘little & often’ approach.
