Not able to eat after 2nd Varices Banding

Hello, my father had went through second round of his varices banding yesterday and it’s been 18 hours since then. Doctor said he put four bands. He had ice cream hour and half after which was no problem but after coming home he is not able to keep anything inside. We tried giving juice, liquid rice pudding and even ice cream again. All just couple of spoons over last night. But he kept throwing up after it. No blood. Just those couple of spoons he ate were out and rest just air.

I called his doctor’s office and was told to keep trying to feed him little little and it will be ok. I told them that’s what we been doing since last night but not working. However they said to carry on trying and it will be fine, just keep giving couple of spoons of ice cream. He is diabetic and not able to eat just making him weaker as it is due to banding appointment he hadn’t ate since previous morning.

Is this normal? I gave him Pantoprazole 40mg (Pantocid 40) now as doctor said. Thanks

It is not normal to not be able to eat. Yes it can be painful and uncomfortable to eat post banding and for some days afterwards. But if Dad is not managing to swallow food and is bringing it back up you should telephone the unit who did the endoscopy. You should have received discharge guidance which should detail this.

Its possible the gas they used to blow up the oesophagus hasn't discharged from the body or that he could have an occlusion (closure of the oesopagus) due to banding. Both need checking urgently.

Contact the unit who did the banding - my hubby used to have to eat 2 pots of yoghurts after banding before they would let him out (he's had 42 bands) and even that same day would manage (albeit painfully) to eat rice pudding, soft eggs or other softened food.

Best wishes

Katie

Hi just had my second banding and they done 4 on Wednesday morning, I am managing soft mash , soup , wheatabix lots of milk . During the night a glass of milk but it was easily 24-30 hours before I could have them. I do feel for him because it’s like really bad indigestion or someone has a fist thrust up under your ribs but if you have any doubts contact the number on your post op leaflets. My very best for him it does get better 😃

Hi zvhipp

We would strongly suggest that your Dad should be medically assessed as a matter of urgency.

There are many complications that can occur post gastroscopy and banding and he should be seen as soon as possible by a doctor.

Wishing him well,

Thank you everyone for replying. After giving him Pantoprazole 40mg, he was able to keep that medicine inside. So, I gave him just boiled water of Green Gram few spoons. Then again after a while and he was able to keep it down. Now he is feeling better. The pain this time was horrendous and I hope he doesn't have to bear it on his 3rd appointment. Although Doctor did said that next endoscopy will be mainly for the purpose of seeing varices and banding will be done only if needs to be. So, I am hoping that he doesn't have to get banding done and go through pain again.

This has been a really painful and depressing experience for him where he tried his best to hold his tears but this situation just breaks the willpower of even the strongest. I did ask Doctor regarding prognosis and condition of his Liver as we still haven't done any CT/MRI Scans. The doctor said that we will do further reports month after his banding process is completed. I hope whatever has caused this condition doesn't continue damaging his liver further.

His Nails are Kind of off whitish in color. Not red. May be due to low Hemoglobin. He is taking vitamins as told by Doctor and also is given Albumin Powder to be taken with Milk to raise Albumin Protein Level (His was 2.8 when last checked 3 weeks back).

So far lost 8kgs of weights in last 3 weeks, lot of muscle. We are trying our best to provide him good diet which can help him. He is not really liking it due to salt being restricted to about 2grams, although we have decided that we will give him about 3gram to 3.5gram max salt per day as 'Sodium' I believe needs to be restricted to 1500 to 2000mg and that should equal to that amount - correct me if I am wrong.

Our aim and wish is for long and healthy life for him. Thank you for your support.
