I have just had a blood result back and my AFP has come back at 1829. Dr Google tells me that is extremely high. Background I have HCC, Cirrhosis had a failed transplant 2 years ago (massive haemorrhage) wasn’t expected to live but am still here. How serious could this be and I know we are not doctors or medical people but somebody could ease my anxiety if they have had a similar reading.

High AFP
Hi Barnetaccounts
If I were in your position I think I would contact the doctor who ordered the blood tests and voice my concerns. It’s possibly nothing to worry about and try and stay calm. But I would find out from my own doctor how the high test result related to your own condition. We are all guilty of googling these things and I have frightened the hell out of myself before thinking the worst Wishing you the best of luck x
I don’t know the answer but my doctor always says my blood results are great FOR ME! Anyone else with these sort of results would be sent straight to hospital in an ambulance.
Hope that I calmed your nerves a bit?
Cheers,
Brett
Hi Brett, My results have always been good. That is why I didn’t die as expected. This has come as a bolt out of the blue. Everything else was normal or verging on normal. It was another couple of days wait for the AFP result. I was brought back in for an MRI and now will find out on Thursday what is going on and where we go from here. I should know better but Dr Google has sent my head into a spin. I will let everyone know what happens in due course.
Ray
Same here Ray.
I had an endoscopy last week. They were adamant that it will come back grade 1 as all my bloods etc are normal. It came back grade 3 varices with three very big bandings. I’ve got another endoscopy today. I don’t know how they will come back as? My MELD was 8 but since the last endoscopy, it has gone up again.
Well, endoscopy went shit. The drugs never worked. I was awake the whole time. Hurt like anything!!
Huge pain still after only two bandings.
Omg poor you! The time before last i was a bit cocky and said I dont require sedation.A mega mistage and that hurt like hell and blood pressure fell through the floor. Tharll teach me and it did. Next time sedation and i dont recall any part of it!
Did you tell them afterwards and what did they say?
They knew it was happening but they didn’t want to stop.
AFP is elevated in chronic hepatitis and cirrhosis. So it wpuldnt be suprising given your diagnosis. I wouldnt think it of much co cern except for how elevated it is. But the Doctor will have to be the one to interpret it against your diqgnosis.
Thanks hopefully I will get all my answers on Thursday
