Fatigue and Nausea.

It’s been 11 weeks since my husband had his first hospital admission. He had varices and ascites. The varices were banded three times and he has had a follow up gastroscope which revealed no further damage. He had diuretic treatment for his ascites which are now controlled along with a 4 stone weight loss. His appetite was very low but has recently improved. Doctor says he is doing well.

My question is he has no energy and spends much of the time lying down covered with blankets as he feels cold , tired and suffers nausea. If we go out for an hour he is unable to do anything for the next 2/3 days. Is this normal or will it improve. He has no quality of life at the moment. Additionally he seems “absent” at times and his voice has become much softer.

Morning! you don't mention your husband's age or diagnosis, it is really important to eat plenty of snacks between meals, perhaps an appointment with a dietician would help to make sure he is eating the right foods to help his condition. Make sure you have appointments in place with the consultant for ultrasounds, blood etc and ask for him to be informed of these as well as your GP. Try to go with him to GP and consultant appointments to explain your concerns and find out how you can help and support him. I do hope he improves and is able to do a little more, to build himself up.

Hi Daisycue, this is just one suggestion. As someone else has said you haven’t said what liver disease your husband has or liver staging. My experience was I had Pbc and in the last year before transplant I was on my fifth admission for bleeding varies. I was simular to how you describe your husband, I couldn’t walk far, eat much and I was utterly weak very ill indeed. I wonder if he is not very low on platelets, red blood cells and iron. I was on the verge of having a transfusion. If you haven’t already I’d ask about your husbands blood results. I hope you find out soon it is very worrying for you. Best of luck.
