New diagnosis

Hi everyone, I’m new here 🙋🏻‍♀️

I have ulcerative colitis and 1 was also diagnosed with primary sclerosing cholangitis - (I think that’s how it’s spelt) in March. I had been symptom free until a few weeks ago but I’ve started to itch .... it’s driving me nuts and appears to be completely at random. I’ve had a google and this appears to be quite usual for liver disease but I was wondering if anyone has any tips for coping?

I am resisting medication as much as possible and I’m keen to try any alternative options first!

Thanks in advance for your guidance guys xxx

Hiya sorry to hear about your diagnosis x .. there are plenty of support groups on Facebook for PSC a few people I know have it.

Regarding your itching nothing alternative really works and we are advised when we have liver disease not to use alternative medicine due to them not knowing what effect it would have on the liver..

Go to your GP he will prescribe you something for the itching x

Hi Sarah,

Welcome to the PSC club.

My advice is take whatever relief you can get. As Jojo says stay off the alternatives and go for whatever the doc will give you.

Hi!

We were advised to stay away from alternative medicine purely because the effects on the liver are unknown and untested. We were prescribed Colestyramine, which is a sachet dissolved in water/juice/soup and it’s stopped dads itching almost entirely :)

Good luck!

Hi Sarah, Getting itch with PSC could be the beginnings of a bile duct infection (bacterial cholangitis) or some kind of blockage in your bile ducts so you definitely don't want to ignore it, nor should you have to put up with it! There are medicines to help with the itch that your GP can prescribe but it is a good idea to also let your hospital team know that you've got itch in case they want to look into it further for you. I hope you can get some relief soon.
