Hello ,

Welcome to the forum where you will be able to get advice and support from others with experience of liver disease. However, this is not a medical forum and none of the members are qualified to diagnose or give specific medical advice.

Users are advised to NOT post test results or scans and request an interpretation from other members. This is clearly stated in the guidelines to both this forum and Health unlocked. Test results vary according to both the individual’s whole health and the specific laboratory / medical team analysing the results. To avoid misinterpretation and undue concerns, results can only properly be understood by a qualified medical practitioner with full knowledge of your unique medical history and circumstances.

Please don’t be discouraged from using the forum as there are members with a great deal of understanding and knowledge of living with liver disease as a patient or carer. They will be able to give you the benefit of that experience with understanding and empathy that can only come from those with first hand involvement.

On the British Liver Trust website you will find a great deal of information about liver disease / health from trusted sources.

Well depending on labs but if the range for normal AST is reported between 10 to 40 units per liter and your plus 17, normal ALT between 7 to 56 units per liter and your plus 38. So I believe you know that or you wouldn’t have asked, if your wanting to know if your sick or drinking to much your driving down the right road to find out, it’s all a matter of time. Your idea or guide to what a moderate drinker is might be slightly askewed so stop that way there is no worries. The answer to your question and remembering each person is unique an I am not a doctor and age matters a bit the mild elevations are generally considered to be 2-3 times higher than the normal range , if you look around this web site you will find people with highs upwards of 1000. So it is great your paying attention and learning about liver problems, read about others with cirrhosis and the effects it has on family & friends and the all wonderful side effects and other organs failure all while waiting for a transplant for months or years, not to mention the cost just to visit those wonderful doctors and the medication & test and diets and the dang itching and constantly exhausted etc.etc.etc.

Good Luck

Typically for AST and ALT to be understood as far as liver is concerned the ratio between the 2 has to be considered. Normally a ratio of 1:1 is prefered AST:ALT.. in your case even though both enzymes are high you ratio is only .61:1 when your ratio is higher like say 1.2:1 a doctor will start to consider liver damage. Usually a ratio of 2:1 or higher indicates severe damage or means cirrhosis has developed. So as far as liver is concerned you should be ok. But ast and alt both being over the high end of normal might mean your liver is inflammed and or fatty. So I would talk to your doctor but it may be as simple as ceasing alcohol until the liver enzymes fall back into normal range.

Hope this helps !
