You might want to make contact with Al-Anon @ al-anonuk.org.uk/ . They provide support to family and friends of those who have issues with alcohol. They might help you better with how to understand your brothers condition. Sadly, no one can make the decision to cease drinking other than the drinker themselves.

Thank you for replying will take your advice

Unfortunately it's incredibly difficult to make them face up to their addiction in many cases, therefore even harder to make them seek the help they need to stop. I fully understand how frustrating and exhausting it is for you watching a loved 1 potentially kill themselves. I agree with the advice Katie has offered. You need as much if not more support than your brother so the sooner you can get that the better. He's on a slippery slope that can get out of control very rapidly and you are going to need a lot of strength if you are the one standing by him.

I am the widow of an alcoholic so been through it all. I wish you luck and hope with you by his side your brother can see the light and kick the drink before its too late and he becomes yet another statistic x

Thank you for taking the time to reply so sorry you lost your husband to alcohol will try to get my brother to see sense but he thinks alls fine

in reply to Streetly

Unfortunately my husband thought it was all ok too. Had it under control. Said he could stop drinking any time he wanted to. When I challenged him to, of course he couldn't do it.

He never could admit he was an alcoholic to me. Even in hospital when they were detoxing him and turned yellow he said it was the drugs they had given him that caused it.

He admitted finally to his councellor that he'd been abusing drink since he was 15 but it was just 3 days before he died that he managed to admit to me he was an alcoholic.

Show these posts to your brother it may help him realise he too has a problem and in order to get help to kick it he has to admit it. Maybe he thinks it's just too soon for him but by the time he does it will sadly be too late.

good luck x

i will only echo katie and laura reply in that he must stop himself for himself.

i have said it before, as he is on this slippery slope to destruction suggest he has his affairs in order and life insurance
