Hi I just went to Doctor and my ALT is 52.He said I need to come back and get other blood tests and a Sono of my abdomen. All my other liver tests were normal. My ast was 28 .
Is there a problem with my AST/ALT ratio ?
Is an ALT of 52 even high?
What could be the causes ?
Thanks
MR D

Hi ringding, we aren't supposed to post test results on here or speculate on them either, that's for your Dr to do. But as you seem anxious, your levels seem to be in the reference range, albeit the alt at the top end of it. The Dr probably just wants more bloods and an ultrasound as a precaution to check for fat in your liver which can cause a spike in alt, as can things like medications, having a virus or exercising too much, there are lots of causes but at the level you posted I would just wait for your further test results and dont worry. It may lower by itself anyway by your next blood test and it sounds like your Dr is thorough too. I hope this helped a little, stacie. X
Talk to your doctor about specifics. That ALT could be in range at certain labs. Only your doctor can tell you what it means clinically.
The AST/ALT ratio is something used to try to determine the underlying nature of potential sources of damage. AST is a less specific indicator which, when elevated, could mean a problem with your liver... or skeletal muscular system... or heart. The ALT is more liver specific. Doctors may use the ratio to hone in on the cause. But I've seen it referenced almost never.
