Obstetric cholestasis/ Intrahepatic cholestasis

I'm 11 weeks pregnant with my third baby. The last pregnancy was 10 years ago. With the first my waters broke at 31weeks (+2 days) and baby delivered. I had ob. Cholestasis but my gynaicologist didn't take it seriously, she said my blood result seems to have been mixed up with an old person's! I was told that this preterm birth isn't going to happen again. And indeed the second time I was induced at 38+2 days as I suffered even more severely with ob. Cholestasis.

Now I'm terrified, although for the first time delighted and very happy to have our first baby with this new partner.

At my second pregnancy I suffered so badly from painful itchiness that was HELL. I felt I cannot suffer any more or I would kill myself. I was on Ursodeoxycholic acid but that felt like a placebo.

I want to know if there's something I can do/ eat/drink NOW in order to prevent or lessen the effects after 27 weeks.

I understand the mechanisms behind but why do some livers respond to eostrogen in the last trimester?? Is it genetic? No family member had it, as far as I know.

Many thanks in advance x

Hi,

Welcome to the forum.

No one on this forum is medically trained and they cannot specifically advise you with regards to this condition.

You may find The British Liver Trust publication on Obstetric cholestasis useful to read;

britishlivertrust.org.uk/wp...

However, please note that this information is for general use. It would be highly advisable to contact your own medical team as soon as possible and fully discuss your condition and how they intend to monitor and care for you.

Your medical team are also best placed to advise with regards to diet etc and they can also fully discuss your condition in depth with you and answer your queries.

We hope that is helpful and wish you a healthy pregnancy,

Best wishes,

Rebecca

Thank you Rebecca. I was told ten years ago thar very luttle is known about it and so decided to do my own research whilst my symptoms haven't started yet. Was wondering if anypne else was ahead of me with their findings.

I will have a good look at the publication you linked me.

Many thanks
