Hubby has NAFLD cirrhosis despite being tee total and in the past having the occasional drink.Lately he has experienced high temp , shivering and sometimes nausea.Is this part of cirrhosis ? Does type 2 diabetes and ulcerative colitis really give him cirrhosis?

These things never happen during GP surgery hours.

As he already has a diagnosis of cirrhosis, you are justified in being worried. For piece of mind I suggest you, first telephone the NHS non-emergency number and give as much information as you can. If you have a thermometer, take his temperature now and every hour. When you call have an actual temperature to give. By the way, its a good idea to take your temperature when you are well, that way you know what is normal for you.

They should be able to advise you on what steps to take next. If they are concerned they can, send an ambulance, advice you to attend an accident and emergency / NHS Walk in Centre or see you GP when next available.

However, if there is any element of confusion, becoming sleepy or unresponsive, then I would go to A & E. It is always going to be better to go there and its a false alarm than not go and find that its serious.

As for the diabetes, are you saying he does have a diagnosed type 2 diabetes ? If so, do you have a blood glucose testing monitor ? If you have, take his blood sugar levels and if they are high or low, take the action you normally take. Liver disease and diabetes often happen together, because they share the same causes. The same is for Ulcerative colitis, some of the medication give for inflammatory bowel disease can affect the liver. Would be best to ask your gastroenterologist about specific links. You might have a nurse specialist attached to the clinic, s/e can advise you as well.

Hi Jim and Lucy.Thank you.I am new to website.Jack was diagnosed 2 yrs ago out of the blue.He had gone for a CT scan and it showed an enlarged spleen,they did blood tests and high liver count came back.Everything has gone on from there.We don't have much support and we are worried financially and socially.Jack is 72 works part time and would like to stop,but we can't survive on his pensions. We don't know where to turn. Best wishes.

When I said go to A & E, if he becomes confused, sleepy or unresponsive, I meant call 999 and ask for an immediate ambulance. Don't drive yourself.

Often they will send a paramedic ahead of any ambulance, so you may get a very rapid assessment. I hope it doesn't come to that.

When was he diagnosed for UC? Have they also checked for PSC? The two go hand in hand, I have both and the PSC is what's caused my liver damage.

Hi .Jack was diagnosed in 2002.Diabetes since 2008.What is PSC ? What I don't understand is why his routine bloods never highlighted his liver enzymes we're through the roof.His cirrhosis was picked up by accident.

PSC stands for primary schlerosing colangitis. It affects the liver and like I say occasionally goes hand in hand with UC. You can find info here pscsupport.org.uk

Am sure they would have ruled it out after this amount of time but there's no harm in asking.

Hi there.Jack has NASH.He has another abdomen scan this pm.Typical in that today I have very bad sore hands.(I have rheumatoid arthritis).From the car park to the x ray Dept is too far for him to walk, so he will need his wheelchair.Jack has diabetic vascular disease in his legs.Hopefully we won't be there too long today.We waited 3 hours the last time.
