How does everyone with moderate to severe fibrosis and cirrhosis feel after they drink coffee or any caffeinated drink? Do you find that you're more sensitive to caffeine?

Decaf ? I try and drink the real thing and then the other alternately . About three a day max. Actual coffee helps those dipping energy levels . I haven't payed attention to side affects. But I do read caffeine is not recommended.

Coffee , up to 4 a day is meant to be good for your liver so they have discovered , after 4 the effect is negligible . So keep drinking your coffee

That's not what I'm asking, I understand that coffee is good for your liver I'm asking if those with cirrhosis feel Shakey or agitated as if they just drank 10 cups of coffee when really they've only drank 1

Cirrhosis can magnify the effects of ALL drugs or give higher sensitivity to them so yes perhaps you are getting a magnified effect of your caffeine hit. Try decaf ........... the coffee is good for your liver and it doesn't have to be full caffeine variety.

Hi yes I do, I have to drink decaf drinks as the caffeine leaves me feeling quite ill, as you said shakey and horrible. It's the same with anything with a decongestant in it like Lemsip or Sudafed. I tried the coffee after that report came out but not able to tolerate it!!!

I think a sick liver struggles with it so I just give it a miss! I find it can also give me diarrhoea and a bad tummy. 😏 X

A number of research projects have been done on coffee and its positive health effects. The British Liver Trust page has the findings detailed at:- britishlivertrust.org.uk/?s...

When hubby attended dietician she recommended he drink one or two cups a day of coffee which he does. Doesn't have to be good coffee and decaf is as good as regular. In hubbies case coffee seems to have a laxative effect.

Liver ill health can magnify the effects of all drugs and caffeine is a pretty powerful one.

BLT page on cirrhosis lists the following amongst cirrhosis symptoms:-

increased sensitivity to drugs, both medical and recreational

increased sensitivity to alcohol

Would tea be as beneficial, it also has caffeine?

Yeah that's what I thought but I was more asking for people's personal experience, I know what the literature says and I know that drug sensitivity is common I was just asking for anyone who reads this to comment on how caffeine makes them feel. I'm told I don't have cirrhosis and the fibroscan was 11 kpa, I don't have any symptoms other than discomfort under rib if I eat something high in fat or salt however if I have a full cup of regular coffee the caffeine hits me like a brick and is very uncomfortable so yes I stick to decaf but even that I get an effect that is not my favorite feeling

I like my coffee and drink a fair bit. Can't say I've noticed any side effects when I have a mug but I'll keep an eye out and let you know if I do.

I feel like I'm going to explode when I drink caffeine. If I drink one cup of coffee or one diet coke I won't be able to sleep. I feel very shaky and sometimes dizzy and nauseous. It's a shame because I really love coffee. I do feel much more sensitive to caffeine since my liver has been more inflamed.

Kicking horse decaf is 100 percent caffeine free and they use a decaf process that doesnt involve chemicals so that's what I always get

Hi Awayfromyou, I definitely get the shakes and agitated feeling after 2-3 cups. I have for absolutely years. Thought it was just my sensitivity to coffee in general. It's horrible and I avoid drinking more than 1 or 2 a day . I had no clue previous to reading your post that my liver was involved. Thanks for asking about this. Its one reason i have been trying on and off for years to swop for decaf. Antone know a good brand - i have not found a 'convincing' alternative they all hint a little too much of Barelycup. I just feel i need that caffeine boost- and like the taste. Glad to hear too Bermuda1 and Ayrshirek that coffee in moderation is not as bad a way to self-medicate as I presumed. As far as liver cirrhosis goes I am waiting for an mri investigation -6 months from now. The liver biopsy didn't reveal that. Blood tests in between now and then. Now I am wondering. At least I can keep the coffee as I adjust the diet. Christmas has been a bit of struggle. I look forward to the end of the dietry challenges this part of the year presents to most of us any way.

I will look into kickingass decaf coffee. Never heard of it but curious. Wonder if it's anyway available online? Maybe it already does exist here in Eire? An alternative to coffee that tastes good would be great all the same.
