last year my husband had a gastroscopy and was told a small varice was developing due to portal hypertension from his cirrohosis. Year on and today his gastroscopy was clear of any varice. Seems strange to me-anyone heard of this happening

Is he on propanolol? That might have reduced the pressure and therefore the varice.

No he hasn't been on any medication for it. Was really pleased as I expected it to have enlarged and be some more. A nice surprise for a change 😀

Are varices painful, or are they just discovered during routine tests. It was quite funny going to the docs tonight ( not sure funny's the right word) but he was trying to simplify what had been noted by the bloke who'd done my scan last week saying that there are' these little cup things in your pipe that are a bit expanded et.... blah blah, and 'cos I'd been on this site with you lot I said ' what, d'you mean 'varices' and he went red realising I knew more than him. Poor bloke doesn't even know the difference really between each kind of liver disease, so although I did feel like he should know more, I was just glad enough that I know enough to talk him into getting me a hep specialist next Tues.

Glad I know you all

Jill

They are not painful no, but they can be dangerous if too much pressure is placed on them. They will probably take you in for banding procedures they just tie them off. Best way to describe them is they are same as varicose veins what you can get on your legs.

I had one small one, they left it to my next visit, it vanished, I've not had any for 3yrs, I take Proponolol, for Angina and for portal hypertension, they say it can prevent them growing, x
