My name Kasia2 and I have lost a lot of muscle mass due to liver chirrosis. Like You I look like an old grandma with just skin and bones.

Hi Kasia2, have you seen a liver specialist dietician at all? When my hubby who has cirrhosis first went to the liver transplant unit we saw a dietician who said hubby has lost muscle due to his illness and gave us a fantastically simple liver diet plan to follow which involves carbohydrate and protein at every meal and little and often snacks plus a big supper to tide you over the longest fast (overnight). If you want to send me a private message with an email address for you and I can forward you a copy of the leaflet we were provided. Don't know whether hubby has rebuilt muscle following it but he has certainly gained weight and a trouser waist size by following it.

All the best, Katie :)

We would suggest to speak to your own liver specialist for specific diet guidance, it is often dependent on stage of disease.

Thanks Katie,

I am in a loooooong line up waiting for transplant, well.. not look at myself because my body is very ugly. To ask a dietician for advice, good idea, will do it.

Leaflet should be in your emails. All the best to you. Your transplant centre should have a specialist dietician and they can advise on supplements and such like which can be obtained on prescription if you are struggling to eat too.

Best wishes, Katie :)

Hello Kasia2

I have cirrhosis and although not an old grandma I am an old grandad and about 7 to 8 months ago I too was just skin and bones having lost about 4 stone in weight since the onset of de-compensation. The liver specialist recommended I significantly increase my non animal source of protein as well as take Ensures on a regular daily basis. I had never previously heard of Ensures but it turns out they are a fully medically approved electrolyte balanced high protein/carbohydrate milk shake type liquid drink and they are available on NHS Prescription. My own GP prescribes them to me in batches of 24 bottles ,assorted flavors each time. Since I commenced taking them I have regained weight as well as both leg and arm muscle but I also do a lot of exercise, walking, running and cycling etc so that may also have helped the recovery process.

In any event the Ensures seem to work for me and they may be something you might want to ask your GP about with a view to giving them a try to see if they work for you. A continuation of the diet that AyrshireK has referred you to is also of great importance.

Good luck

Regards

Sure there is, I'm struggling to put on weight because at night is like a fast period and to get it's needs the body gets it's needs from your body fat and muscle. My consultant recomended plenty of full milk , dairy produce and meat for protein , also needed is carbs. How ever this may be difficult if you are vegeterian. Drather then big meals Snack throughout the day. He also said a couple of biscuits prior going to sleep at night also helps. But please check with your doctor before you try this.

Hey,I was decompensated this time last year with ascites. I went down to just over 7 st. I’m now just under 12 with muscle mass. I can’t say I’ve been super strict with my diet,I craved sugar when I stopped drinking. In fact I’m fitter and have more muscle mass that I have ever had!! Crazy!! All the best on your journey to better health. I also believe strongly in a positive mindset,I know it’s hard sometimes but try and enjoy life it’s so short and precious!! 😊
