Hi Bev, are you currently being seen by a liver specialist/transplant team? If not then I would push for a referral to a liver specialist. If you are experiencing the mad itching then it could be a sign of bilirubin build up in your tissues, there are others on hear who have and might be able to advise. It would appear that every liver case is unique, not everyone has the same symptoms and certainly don't receive the same treatments. You should be seeing a liver specialist who will give proper advice and advanced treatment. PUSH, PUSH, PUSH for a referral.

All the best, Katie

Hi Bev,

I had the mad itching too :( I was given Questran (Cholestyramine) and Piriton (Chlorphenamine), and also acqueous cream with menthol (2%), which cooled the skin a bit. They may try you on Ursodeoxycholic Acid.

Bathing helped, as well as Aveeno Colloidal Oat bath treatment. Anti-itch anti-histamine sprays also helped sometimes. Later on, my husband bought me a high-power fan and a special pillow (like a diagonal block) for me to put my leg up on. Keeping them cool helped a lot.

Please do let us know what your consultant/liver specialist says.

Hi guys,

I had a transplant in feb due to PBC. Itching was unbearable prior to transplant, my consultant prescribed rifampicin. It was fantastic, hardly itched at all. I understand it may not be suitable for everyone but it may be worth a mention to your docs it may give you the relief it gave me. Good luck x

Hey Bev,

The most important thing is to get a referral to a Liver Specialist(and make sure it a Liver Specialist and not a Gastroligist) This so important! My itching was bad but manageable with Lactolose(ugh) . Hopefully you will get relieve soon.
