Why would you want to? No I wouldn't have thought it is a good idea at all, my hubby recently saw a liver specialist dietician who put him on a high carbohydrate and high protein diet. Liver patients need to eat regular throughout the day as your body can no longer store energy from food. If you don't eat for any period your body will start to break down your muscles for fuel. Even the gap between meals is long enough for this process to start and muscle wastage will occur. As regards no water for 19 hours even a 'well' person would become ill, dehydrated and possibly cause damage to liver and kidneys (ESPECIALLY - in this heat wave which we are having!!). If you need help with a diet plan, message me your email address and I can sent you an excellent short leaflet which we were provided from the Liver Transplant Unit in Edinburgh it highlights the type of food and timing of meals etc. & is really simple to follow.

Is this something to do with fasting? There are exceptions for people with illnesses.

I have had a transplant. Before and after I was encourage to eat well with plenty of protein. I was also prescribed, because I had little appetite, fresubin, a protein enriched drink which was easy to take. Doing without water is a big nono, even for a healthy person. It can certainly contribute to liver and kidney damage. Why you would want to fast in such a way is baffling.
