Going on holiday when my treatment ends and just came across nhs.uk/ehic

Did any of you do that before traveling? Should I just get a private travel insurance to be safe?

I had both private travel insurance as I had already had this card. I took the private one too to be on yhe safe side.

My understanding is that the ehic only entitles you to the same treatment available to the citizens of the country you are visiting. This includes being able to claim a refund of charges in some cases. Think broken bones, cuts that need stitching. It does not cover all treatments however, and things like repatriation should you need to be flown home in an emergency. Private travel insurance covers much more. Have a lovely time away. X

Hi The EHIC will cover you for basic treatment in the country you are visiting, and covers pre-existing medical conditions, but as someone else has said it doesn't cover you for re-patriation if you need it, so even without a pre-existing medical condition you should really take out travel insurance. I have used Boots online for my insurance, and for me (breast cancer, chemotherapy, mastectomy, etc) and my husband (who has prostate cancer) it has come in at £60 for the two of us for an annual european insurance, and includes pre-existing conditions, would highly recommend the site.
