having had breast cancer may I give you the benefit of my experience, please?

Be guided by your health professionals. Have someone you trust with you when you see them so they can ask any questions where it’s not clear, and they can write down the answers of need be.

Don’t overthink things.

Let the professionals guide you one step at a time: too fast and it’s completely overwhelming. They’ve been through this with many women so they have the experience, wisdom and judgement to take you at your pace but not too fast.

Will knowing exactly what that score mean help you personally? It will no doubt help the multi-disciplinary team to make decisions but does that information help you in any way? Do you have the background to understand its implications even if you did know what it means? If not, be guided by them and don’t read up too much about it. Believe your medical team, any specialised breast cancer charities (and maybe here in HU) and be cautious about anything else.

Hello. Try and not worry. The important this that they found your tumour. It’s the overall picture that counts. Tumour size, and lymph nodes affected, if any. Will gladly share some of my experience with my partner

Hi,

A Ki - 67 score of 64% is quite high but not the end of the world

I had a score of 80% in the main tumour then I think 60%, 40% & 20% in the other three satellite tumours (from what I remember). I haven’t come across anyone with as high a score as mine yet!

From what I understand it is the rate of how fast the cancer cells divide.

On the bright side, having a faster dividing tumour means that there’s a good chance it can respond well to chemotherapy as chemo targets fast growing cells.

I am 5 years post diagnosis so hopefully worked well for me.

I like to know the ins and outs of cancer and treatments but I try to focus on the positives.

Fingers crossed you will do well. So many have long healthy lives after cancer. Try to find things you enjoy and look after yourself. Sometimes cancer can be a big wake-up call. It can change your whole outlook on life and make you realise it’s better to focus on the positives, not sweat the small stuff and be a bit selfish doing things that bring you joy.

Best Wishes

The use of ki-67 in breast cancer remains controversial it is usually a good biomarker in predicting chemotherapy response and prognosis but this undetermined in breast cancer. In the UK we are not usually given too much information about our diagnosis only told about a treatment plan. I cannot remember being given much information other than it was very aggressive. Hopefully you will be told your treatment plan soon which I am sure will work in you beating this cancer. Take care.

Apologies for the late reply. Ki-67 is a biomarker of cell proliferation - the higher the %, the more cells that are growing. The good news, as mathematics indicates, is that proliferating cells are a good target for chemotherapy and will hopefully provide an effective treatment. Wishing you all the best.
