Proof of hypnagogic jerks

Hello, I’ve been experiencing body jerks and hypnagogic jerks when I’m falling asleep, I went to a neurologist and got scheduled to have a MRI and EEG. My question is will proof of hypnagogic jerks show on the MRI or EEG even if I don’t have one during the testing?

Hello zlambert,

Is this causing you serious concern? I'm not able to answer your question, but a quick look online brings up an article which may be reassuring at least.

I have found mine to correlate with my level of anxiety at the time.

Very common. It’s also normal for women more than men in their 30-40s who have extremely busy days. Your muscles are releasing the enzymes and acids that are built up over the day.

I think everyone experiences hypnagogic jerks at some point I wouldn't worry it's totally normal just like getting hiccups =)

The MRI is to look for any structural anomalies. I suggest you go in sleep-deprived for your EEG. In adults these myoclonic jerks while falling asleep are very normal. If you’re female even more so. Malabsorption of iron is usually the culprit. If you even get drowsy on EEG it will show but it might be hard to see brain activity under muscle artifact. I’m surprised they’re taking this route although I don’t know your history. Good luck and I hope the best for you.
