i have the contraception implant in.its been in 3 years (need to get out) can i be pregnant
Hi J,
So sorry for the delay in getting back to you. Have you taken a pregnancy test at all?
The contraceptive Implant contains enough hormone (Progestogen) to last for 3 years. If you have had the Implant in longer than 3 years, then the effectiveness decreases and it will no longer give you full contraceptive cover. This is why you need to have it removed at this point and use a different method if you still want to avoid pregnancy. So yes it is possible that you may be pregnant, especially if you have symptoms like sore breasts, needing to wee a lot and maybe some nausea/sickness.
If you haven't done a pregnancy test, you should do as soon as possible. If the test is positive, then you will need to get in touch with GP or local maternity unity so you can get the support and health checks you need in the important early stages of their pregnancy.
In terms of your implant, it is really easy to get it removed. Your GP or practice nurse might be able to do it, but if not a contraceptive or GUM clinic will certainly be able to. The FPA have a really handy tool to help your find your nearest clinic here which might be useful: fpa.org.uk/find-a-clinic
Feel free to give me a shout if you have any other questions or concerns.
Best wishes,
Katherine
