I am an 80year old and have had IBS for many years but it has become much worse over the last 2/3 years with marked weight loss. Has been investigated for malignancy which is negative but widespread Diverticular disease found .
I have been prescribed Amitryptiline 25 MGM’s nightly which gives me a very dry mouth at night and makes me very sleepy by day . Will the side effects ease as I continue to take it.?

Amitriptyline will make you sleepy even at 25mg so best to take it in the evening so by daytime the next day you will not be so drowsy! Dry mouth is one of the main side effects - maybe just keep some water near you so you can take sips as and when. But, if you have Diverticular, then surely this needs treating? Go back and speak to your GP and insist you see someone who can give you the right meds to help your condition. You need a proper gastroenterologist; I do wonder of because of your age you are being 'side-lined' so to speak!
I take Amitriptyline at 7 in the evening so I can function the next day. I also have diverticular disease but I take Fybogel daily to help clear the bowel and Mebeverine to ease spasms. Maybe they would help you if your GP would prescribe them.
