Is anyone on Risedronate ? I am taking it because I had painful side effects from alendronic acid. I’m desperate to know whether it works.

I had a DEXE scan in my late 70s. . I had never thought I’d have osteoporosis because I’m a walker and was a tennis player up to two years ago. I am very frightened now to find my T score is 4.3 in my spine.

I could not take either Alendronic Acid or Risedronate. I am about to have my second infusion of Zoledronic which I had no side effects from the first time. My advice is try the Risendronate but stop at once if you think it doesn't suit. It gave me dreadful headaches and I never have a headache! I ended up with sinusitis and had to take antibiotics. It;s kind of a minefield out there ...

Being fit makes no difference in having Osteoporosis. I am 81 and spent my life from aged 7 to 71 playing so many sports, tennis, walking, sking 4 weeks per year, climbing, abseiling competition gymnastics until aged 16, etc etc. In fact I was a total adrenaline junkie!! I asked my Osteoporosis Consultant if that had been the cause of my Osteoporosis to which he said NO, unfortunately it just happens. So many of my joints have been replaced including metalwork in my spine but I have sooo much happiness to look back on I'm totally at ease with my problems.

Good luck, think positive, enjoy life as it is now and look back on your lovely memories.

I have been on Risedronate for 3 years now as I couldn’t take Alendronic acid, made me so ill. I take 5mg a day instead of one once a week and I’ve been ok on it. Good luck.

I started Risedronate in march 2024. I had kidney pain for the 1st two doses but after that I was ok. I feel a bit weak and feeble with a slight headache until lunch time. I don’t need any pain relief and just don’t plan anything energetic until the afternoon. As long as you stay upright for the 1st 30 mins you will be ok with regards gastric problems.

Hi Lyralyra, I too had problems with Alendronic acid (very painful mouth ulcers) but I have happily taken Risondronate for the last 6 years. My dexascan results have improved in that time so I am now normal for my age in the hips and a just little improvement required in my lumbar spine now. Good luck, I hope it works for you too.

Thanks. Good to know your results have improved. I’ve taken it for a week now and getting some pain but I’ll persevere.

That's interesting (and good) to read re-ponygirl's results. I was on Alendronic Acid for 6 months until the leg pain it seemed to cause became untenable. I then went on Risondronate which I take weekly. I still get a bit of leg pain, including when I have to take a week off due to dental treatment or work (when I can't stay upright when I need to!). I've been on it about three years now and my bones have got worse unfortunately (-3). I'm going to be rescanned in a couple of years. As the doctor says, I might be in a lot worse position if I hadn't been taking it. I'm 63.

I’ve been taking Risedronate weekly for several years after switching from Fosamax. So far, no side-effects at all. Good luck!
