I've been reading all your posts about going private. How do you know who to go to ? Will a doctor recommend someone ?
I think my Dr expects me to take her advice but how knowledgeable will she be ? I don't expect a Dr to be an expert in everything and feel I'd rather speak to someone who specialises in osteoporosis before making a decision.
Best wishes.

Hi. I found my GP was very limited in knowledge about OS. However, I found the ROS website and ROS nurses have a wealth of information on all aspects of OS. Of course some GP's might specialise in certain medical conditions so you never know you might strike lucky and get one. Also this forum is really helpful. I found that the more information I had about OS the more I started to feel in control of it. Wishing you all the best on your journey
Not always easy. Appointments are not as quick as they used to be. Two ways. If you are near a private hospital e.g. Spire or do a private hospital search then go to their website and search for a consultant that specialises in osteoporosis. Second way go to the BUPA website and you can search “find a healthcare service” at the top. You don’t need to log in. Stick in osteoporosis and you post code. I would only go for their “platinum” consultants. Even privately there are some not so good consultants so when you think you’ve found one search them and see if you can find any reviews. Good luck.
Thank you Armagnac for that advice. I did look at the Osteoscanuk site and they are taking bookings for end of May but if that's the way to go I am willing to wait.
I'm wondering if the references you've read about going private are from those of us who've had a private REMS bone scan? If so, there are currently only 2 in England and a very new one in S Wales that provide it. The main one is osteoscanuk.com, which is based in Northamptonshire but holds clinics around the country, including in Scotland, Wales and N. Ireland. The others are Profortis in Amersham and Acorn Clinic in Penarth. With Osteoscan you get a consultation with an orthopaedic consultant specialising in osteoporosis, Profortis is with a physiotherapist and the Acorn Clinic is with a consultant radiologist.
Thank you Met00 that's exactly what I wanted to know. The osteoscanuk.com have a mobile clinic 30 miles from me but I am willing to travel. I have to tell my Dr whether I want the AA so need to find out how she feels about private consultations.
Thank you so much everyone, this is such a good forum. I feel much better knowing there is such a wealth of knowledge on the site.
Your GP is very unlikely to know about REMS scans, which aren't officially recognised by the NHS. Some doctors do accept them, but many don't. I would wait till you've had a REMS scan and consultation before deciding. There's a long waiting list for osteoscan's mobile clinics, unless you're lucky enough to get a cancellation, but you can usually get in quite quickly at their base near Daventry.
The ROS website and Helpline are both fantastic sources of information - my rheumatologist recommended them for my research and answers all my questions that we didn't have enough time to cover
I have read a lot on this forum about people going for the osteoscan. What is the difference from this scan to the dexta scan. Can they give you different information and scores than the dexta and what are the benefits for going for one. Any information would be appreciated as I have been thinking of booking one
