I had 4 fractures recently. Eventually after 5 months I saw a consultant who gave me a brace and arranged for a review in 6 weeks. At review, fresh xrays showed that all the fractures had healed, but the thoracic one is still giving me a lot of pain. Is that the norm, and will the pain ever go?

Do thoracic fractures ever stop hurting?

I have had two lots of thoracic vertebrae fractures and both times after the first week or so the pain lessened greatly and the fractures healed and now the pain has gone but the inconvenience remains. My consultant has never mentioned a back brace.
When I had a rib fracture the discomfort took a long time to go. it lessened slowly over a period of several months. Hope that helps a bit.
Cheers, Midori
Hi Pineau. Twenty years' ago I had two wedge compression fractures in my thoracic spine (between my shoulder blades T4 & T5) but they were due to a high impact fall and left me with kyphoscoliosis - I was in a lot of pain and was off work for six months. I found the help of my osteopath, who gave me gentle rotation, articulation and massage, with absolutely no manipulation at all, a great help as it reduced the discomfort I was in but I had to wait for three months after the fractures before I could commence the treatment, in order for things to settle a bit.
Hi Springcross, thanks for sharing that, must have been a horrendous time for you. So did the pain eventually all go or is it still with you due to the kyphosis?
It did go mostly, although I do still get discomfort, particularly if I've been doing the wrong things, but nothing like it was back then, thank goodness. I do still find osteopathy really helpful, as long as it's gentle. I hope you find help with your pain, I know how bad it can be.
Thanks Springcross, that gives me hope. I have used an osteopath in the past with very good success. I'll contact her in another month or two when my back has had a bit more time to settle. I'm sure it would help with the muscle pain and keeping my back more relaxed. Have a lovely Christmas 🎄 😊
