Protruding Tummy.

Hi everyone, I have severe Kyphoscoliosis and Osteoporosis. My tummy has started to stick out just below my bust and above my Tummy button. It also seems. to be sore if I lean against anything.

I have read that your internal organs can get squashed with Osteoporosis and wondered if it could be that.

I have lost 5 inches in height and also have had numerous fractures as well.

Thank you Jenny x

I am sorry you are getting so uncomfortable. There may be something you can do to help straighten your back. Now is not the time to look for physiotherapy of course. However if you have access to walking poles or Nordic walking poles you may find using them helps you to become more erect and that should help, even if only temporarily. I friend of mine who was very bent over finds they really help. She still is bent over without them. I don't know if there are exercises you can do to strengthen the core muscles which support the spine.

Maybe this person can offer good advice:

Do you suffer from indigestion? Eating little and often may help. I found cutting out unrefined carbs helps to prevent stomach bloating which may be a different cause of distention but it might help. The diabetes charities websites have good advice on low carb diets that are balanced and healthy.

Pilates strengthens your core. Ive been doing it every day for 6 months and my posture is the best it's ever been. Even my chiropractor noticed !! When I went in to see her she said My goodness you're standing

straight!

Exercise is the key to a straighter back. However you need to be well and not in pain from current fractures.

Sitting for long periods exacerbates the kyphosys.

Find a gym that can help you to slowly build back strength in your core without causing anymore damage to the spine.

Lying on the floor using different supports like pillows and foam rolls help to straighten back.

Slowly and gently is a must. Trying to push through this quickly would probably cause more damage.

Let your body do the talking...and slowly you will begin to see an improvement.

Once you learn basic exercises for yourself, you can continue them at home for a little while every day.

Hi, I suffered 8 rebound vertebral fractures after completing a course of Prolia (Denosumab) . My bodyshape changed irreversibly. I lost height and developed kyphosis because several of the fractures were thoracic vertebrae. My stomach also began to protrude and I gained 3 inches on my waist so hardly any of my clothes fitted me and had to be altered or discarded. My specialist physiotherapist said that kyphosis and my new spinal shape had caused internal organs to be squashed which in turn caused the protuberant stomach. I do Pilates and try to walk everyday, but I fear that the changes in body shape are irreversible.

Hello Jenny Attic,

I had 8 spinal fractures and although very, very active before, I sadly haven't yet got back to where I aim to be, but I do keep at it and am making very small improvements.

Like you I lost height and changed shape!

I still, over two years down the line, eat 4 small meals and 2 snacks a day, I'm struggling to put some weight on and got help from a Dietician to do all this.

Still under a Physio, when I started I used walking poles but it was suggested I needed more support so now use crutches, once the fractures heal and I could breath with out too much difficulty I was offered a spinal corset. With this I am able to sit and stand much more upright. The combination of doing over an hour a day of physio and the corset has been a life line, I now only use a wheelchair if I out.

My tummy is not as protruding as a result.

I needed to change my style of clothes so that I could dress with minimum aid and to fit over the corset but that in itself helped...... I looked better therefore started to feel better.

Good luck

Hi. I am in a similar situation. I lost 4 inches in height and am bent over. I just saw my back doctor. He was emphatic: no Pilates, no yoga, no weightlifting for a while. He said no

foam rollers or other stretching

equipment. I did just get over my fifth vertebra fracture. I am allowed to walk on the treadmill for five minutes at a time. I also do some basic stretching exercises I found online. I first lie on a heating pad to warm up my back muscles.

My stomach is also sticking out. However, I’m not a bent over as I used to be!
