Help with adapted vehicle.

My husband has COPD and is on oxygen 24/7 does anyone know if I can get help with a vehicle that his mobility scooter can go in the back of. At the moment I have to lift his wheelchair into the car and then we hire a scooter from the Mobility centre where we are shopping or a scooter from the supermarket.

Has anyone out there got any advice?

Hello my dad suffered from Rheumatoid Arthritis for a long time in the end he got a motorised scooter, sorry I can`t remember the sort and my parents are no longer alive, but I know they drove a Scenic maybe by Renault but don`t quote me on that but if you look under Scenic say on e-bay it will give you the exact make and I know it was on DLA high rate so it was changed every 3yrs, my mum had Emphysema/Bronchiectasis, but they managed to get around because my mum was so ill they were given ramps, hope this helps x

Hi Jean. I have the mobility component of the disability living allowance, which has given me access to a Motability vehicle - the most wonderful thing the government has every given me.

I have a Chevrolet Orlando which has a very large boot which contains my Elite Traveller scooter though I had to have it modified to balance getting it in and out on a hoist. I had to pay for the scooter and the hoist - scooter cheaper on the net.

Hi Jean. If your husband is on high rate mobility you can get a WAV from Motability. If you look on their website motability.co.uk/ it will advise you and you can always give them a ring to talk about your needs.

do a 40kg two way hoist, as it folds to bootfloor will fit most vehicles including some saloons,

contact via phone or email for suitability and list of installers. I paid £265 including fitting.

There is grants available for adaptions, contact your local CAB or Age UK.

You can sometimes pick up a bargain with an ex Motability scheme vehicle at auction.

People who have higher rate mobility component of DLA can choose to have a brand new car via the Motability scheme. They have them for 3 years, then they are changed for another new one. The old vehicles are then sent to auction, but have a complete service record, one (usually careful) owner and so on. I just saw that the one nearest me have a WAV (wheelchair accessible vehicle) special sale tomorrow.

Check british-car-auctions.co.uk/... to see if there are any auctions near you if this is something you want to consider. You need to register on the site to be able to see what vehicles will be sold at a given auction.

If you are on the high rate dla for mobility, you can also get a grant towards the 'advance payment' on a WAV, depending on your personal finances.

If you want a WAV to drive the scooter into, you will need a converted van. We have a Peugeot Partner Tepee for our grandson who we have living with us. He is in an electric wheelchair which we can just drive up the ramp and clamp into place. I would recommend a ramp if you go down this route, rather than a lift/hoist, as they are much, much safer.

Also, look at 'pre-used WAV's on the motability site, as their advance payments are so much lower.

Have a Citroen Berlingo from motability it does everything we ask of it getting out with a ramp into the back that saves any lifting. Motability has been smashing with anything we have asked for I will recommend them.

I have a pride traveller plus scooter and now have ramps to get the scooter into the back of the car. An easy job with ramps. it does depend on the size of the scooter though. For instance will the scooter fit in your car?
