Shielding

Has anyone else received their notification about Shielding, I have just received mine by e-mail to say that we are to carry on Shielding until at least the 31st March 2021 and we will be notified in middle of March if there is any change. So I guess we all still have to wait to see what Boris has to say at the briefing Monday 22nd Feb to see what we can and can't do from there. Just hope it is not to long before I can go to the hairdressers!

Take care everyone.

With an added 1.7 million added to the shielding list and being prioritised for vaccination, that will probably mean until they have had the jab shielding will remain in place, until at least then. If there is a hiccup in vaccine supply, it may be extended yet again.

I know what you mean, can't do anything with the back of mine already and as my hair is bouncy it puffs out so much at the sides, some days I do spray hairspray on and then press my hands either side to flatten it a bit.😣

Snackjack profile image
Snackjack in reply to B0xermad

I know exactly what you mean, I have tentatively cut my fringe (not very straight) but not got the nerve to tackle the rest as it more than likely would look even worse. Just avoid looking in the mirrors in the bedroom and bathroom!

sassy59 profile image
sassy59 in reply to Snackjack

I cut my fringe too. Dare not do the rest though. Xxxx

Jaybird19 profile image
Jaybird19 in reply to sassy59

i cut whati can see Unfortunately my hair style is very short and comes forward ( I correct that --- was very short) . So I cut the top and sides and now have the once fashionable MULLET . Ugh. I darent ook at back but the rest is niot bad as it has gone sort of curly. !

sassy59 profile image
sassy59 in reply to Jaybird19

I don’t trust myself to cut my hair, just the fringe. So you’re bringing back the mullet Jaybird. That’s ok. Xxxx

Jaybird19 profile image
Jaybird19 in reply to sassy59

oh no not willingly just make a point of not looking at back of head in mirror, cannot reach it to cut and avoid looking.

in reply to sassy59

Well that’s not a problem for me Sassy... I was diagnosed with Breast Cancer last August !!! Started treatment very quickly after Biopsy, surgery 15th September.... Chemo started 21st November - last one will be 4th March then Radiotherapy. Within about ten days of Chemotherapy starting I was virtually completely bald so no hair issues for me !!! 👩‍🦲 Hope you & Pete are staying safe & well. xx

sassy59 profile image
sassy59 in reply to

Oh dear Helen, sorry to hear that. I hope the treatment isn’t too stressful. I remember when our daughter-in-law had breast cancer. Thankfully she’s made a good recovery.

We’re doing well thank you and wishing you well too.

Take care xxx💜😘🌹

in reply to

Actually Sassy it’s a nightmare. Horrendous fatigue, can’t taste a single thing & some nausea virtually all the time. The not being able to see any of my family is probably the worst part... I’m in West Wales ( haven’t seen my daughter since before I was diagnosed) - she lives in Worthing - in the Police , works in HQ in Lewes & we were on the point of house hunting for me before all this happened. My son & his family live in America so FaceTime is a blessing. Friends & neighbours are being wonderful but of course I am Shielding so no one can come in & I only go out once every three weeks for treatment. Good to hear that your daughter in law made a good recovery... I remember when you posted that she had been diagnosed.... it’s the most awful thing to have to go through. xx

Jaybird19 profile image
Jaybird19 in reply to Snackjack

there will be a lot less virus around then but you will still only have about 60 % protection if astrazeneca vacc.

Snackjack profile image
Snackjack in reply to Jaybird19

Exactly and I did get the AstraZeneca, didn't have a choice.

Jaybird19 profile image
Jaybird19 in reply to Snackjack

its because of the storge temperature . the big centres do pfizer and the gps do astrazeneca. My brother in law had pfizer at hospital and sometoime later my sister had astrazeneca at local gp s set up, Myy stepson has been advised to have astrazeneca as he has immunological problems and is sometimes on steroid skin cream and dr thinks it would be less of problem

Nickcv profile image
Nickcv in reply to Jaybird19

Our major vaccination hub for West Kent has only offered the AstraZeneca vaccine since it opened.

Jaybird19 profile image
Jaybird19 in reply to Nickcv

I suppose it depends on t he storage facility not all can do the -70'ç for the Pfizer.

Nickcv profile image
Nickcv in reply to Jaybird19

My neighbour works at one of the vaccination hubs and the Pfizer vaccine has a shelf life of 3 days after being taken out of -70c storage. The vaccination centre stores it in a normal refrigerator once it's delivered.

Ok. I have given up making plans. I am just thankful to be alive and think of all the poor souls that have lost their lives. Because of shielding I don't see many people anyway and if they don't like the way I look, then it's tough. Lol

As many of us shielding will not get the second jab till April and then it takes another three weeks to be effective not expecting much change for the time being . Then there’s the extra vulnerable being added to the existing list. But freedom to go to the hairdressers would boost the moral fingers crossed. : )

madonbrew profile image
madonbrew in reply to katieoxo60

Yes I thought that Katie...our 2nd jabs not until mid to end April, then a few more weeks after! It will be May!

katieoxo60 profile image
katieoxo60 in reply to madonbrew

Some might not get there’s till summer so could be Autumn before all the first groups are done. Then it will be time for annual flu jab, not moaning just stating the facts as they appear.

madonbrew profile image
madonbrew in reply to katieoxo60

Yes it’s true. We’ll just have to continue shielding and being very careful.

Got mine yesterday. I wasn't planning on changing my daily life anyway till I feel safe. It reminds me of the lyrics of that lovely song from Fiddler on the Roof. "Sunrise,Sunset, Sunrise,Sunset,Swiftly flow the years, one season following another laden with happiness and tears.

Croydonia profile image

I did have the thought that I would be able to start to emerge on 22nd February, but have to resign myself to another 6 weeks after that, at least. It really seems never ending, and I’m finding it hard to stay cheerful.

Snackjack profile image
Snackjack in reply to Croydonia

Please do stay cheerful, let us think that we are at least on the home strait!

Jaybird19 profile image
Jaybird19 in reply to Croydonia

and its no good until everyone is out as nothing will be happening . my car is dead, needs taxing and servicing before i can go anywhere, also cleaning as parked under a tree and is no longer white but green. Got 10% off insurance for not having it on road last year apparently most insurance companies will do that.. still looking forward to freedom

I got my email last night telling me to shield longer.

Oh my hair it’s such a mess!

Top of my list for when we are finally free is seeing and

hugging my children and our Granddaughter and second

is having my hair cut I can’t wait! 😂

Keep safe everyone. We’ll get through this and we have

Yes, I got mine by email last night. I'm feeling a bit fed up about it actually as it seems like deja vu. Are we going to be stuck at home until July again? I hope not.

Having had my little moan, I DO realise this is for our own good and so of course, I will comply with it. Better safe than sorry. xx Moy

Got my email yesterday.

Was looking forward to perhaps seeing my daughters/grandson/great grandaughter. So am very disappointed at the moment.

Presumably the (new ????extremely clinically vulnerable) 1.7million to be added to the shielding list will be diabetics, heart patients .... sounds like the rest of the human race to me.

I cannot see shielding ending much before all of this group and more are vaccinated .... Hope not but May springs to mind

Keep safe

Keep your spirits up

It's absolutely crazy. I have also had another letter from Matt Hancock, this time re 31st March extension to lockdown. In early December I was one of the first to get a vaccine....long queue...narrow corridor...waiting round. For my second vaccine, once again spaced out...long queue....while waiting. Yet I can't get onto a bus, go into a shop or board a train. I would be distancing, but this time having had two jabs. Can anyone give me an answer please? It's six weeks since my SECOND Pfizer vaccine. If I can't do anything, what is the difference from when I didn't have the vaccines?

Jaybird19 profile image
Jaybird19 in reply to skipwork

the differnce -hopefully less virus around.

Snackjack profile image
Snackjack in reply to skipwork

No I can't give you an answer. There are an awful lot of us that are still waiting for our 2nd jabs and with millions still to go I guess we all just have to be patient. It must have been quite a logistical nightmare to arrange it all, pleased I didn't have the job. I have made my mind up that until the masses have been vaccinated I prefer to stay safe at home. Having said that I am looking forward to when I can emerge and meet up with friends for coffee and chat and go out for a meal, get to the hairdressers on a regular basis. I accept that I am very risk averse and have accepted that it is what it is, just have to take it as it comes.

Hi I was diagnosed with clots on one lung in October but have never been told to shield. I havent seen a consultant or had any more checks since then. I spoke to a doctor online and he said I dont need to shield. Should I have been? Thanks for any info you can give me.

Snackjack profile image
Snackjack in reply to Readingrock

Sorry but I do not know the answer. I cannot tell you what to do but if I was you I would be having a conversation with my doctor to ask questions about the diagnosis. I think most doctors are doing phone consultations during the pandemic if it is not essential for you to attend the surgery. Hope that you can get something sorted as from what you have posted you seem to have been left in limbo.
